Basal state unless the date can be identified.

Basal state unless the date can be identified. Well I had originally thought it could be determined as a 1794 Half Cent due to the large head, which was a one year type. But now that I look at it a bit more thoroughly, I'm not quite sure anymore which type of head it is. It almost looks like something in between the large and small versions - there simply isn't enough detail left to tell. In that case, I'll probably pass on this one. |

OK, so I found another one from the same seller that I'm considering. This one is a Liberty Cap Right, No Pole Half Cent, that can be conclusively dated to 1795 even though the date is not visible. It looks to me like an honest Poor-1, with no major problems other than excessive wear. The price is solidly within my budget. Any thoughts on whether this coin would grade straight?   |

The first coin is definitely a 1794. The variety might be able to be determined by what appears to be a die break arc in the right obverse field. What prices are you looking at here for these coins? We might be able to help guide you on value...

I have been trying to look through past auction results to determine a reasonable price, though it is tough to do for such a low grade piece. The best I could find were a few Poor-1 and Fair-2 coins that sold for around 200 dollars. The second one is being offered for 90, which seems about right for a Poor-1. |

If you have more patience, you should be able to find one for a couple hundred in a details holder that has far more detail than the ones you are proposing. I don't think you will be happy with hunk of ugly copper that you can barely make out any details on.

If I were a counterfeiter, would I really want to be making fakes in poor condition? Wouldn't it be more cost-effective to be making attractive coins?

I see a lot of posts like this. Please ask yourself: Why WOULDNT this be authentic? There is absolutely no reason to fake a coin that looks like this.

In my opinion, don't buy either. Buy one that may be details, but at least AG. Not PO or FR.
