That scratch probably doesn't look as bad in hand as it does blown up in the pic. VF-35.

35 or so. It makes virtually no difference if it's details or not. It's a very inexpensive common date.

I know its a common date but I like the piece and not trying to buy the most expensive and rare coins. Just like solid coins.

Don't mind the naysayers basspro! If you like it that's all that matters. 1881 isn't the most common date for the series like the 1865-67 dates and offers a good value. I like this coin too.

3CN not 3CS

Nickel not silver

3CS ended in 1873 (proof only).

Here is the actual grade. I think Anacs was a little to hard on the coin. I think it was a 35-40. Scratch on neck is not bad at all just in close up.

Why do you say that panzaldi? It's a really good coin not dipped or cleaned?

I think panzaldi is referring to the scratch on the obverse. However, I have to disagree. I think that the scratch is not sufficient to "details" the coin.

I agree SivlerD. When you look at it live you can't even see it only on a up close picture can you see it. If they put 'details' on every coin that had a small scuff or nick they would only be putting grades on MS coins

the scratch looked fairly deep and is in a prominent location. its the first thing that draws the eye when looking at the coin. to me it looked like a gouge more than just a surface scratch. thats the only thing I was basing it on.

I was pulled in by the "area" on the neck as well...oh well...it does have character!
