I have heard chase will change up to 100 USD for non customers. I will be over for two weeks not worth opening a account.

You could possibly linkup with a fellow CRHer from this board and they could buy what you want on your behalf. There should be someone from NYC who would be willing to help a fellow CRHer. I'm on the west coast, so I cannot help, sorry.

Getting a few rolls at a time shouldn't be any problem if you have cash in hand, but most banks roll their eyes and drag their feet to get boxes for their long time customers, and will flat out refuse for anyone without an account.

Linking up with a member here is your best bet, but you could also try at gas stations, grocery stores, etc. At my old job in retail, the customer service desk always kept extra rolls of quarters on hand, because customers needed them for laundry on an almost daily basis.

What are you looking to find? IMO, nickels are the most fun to search, because they most reliably yield old coins from the 50s and 40s.

A point to consider - it is a federal offence (huge fine) to export cents or nickels for melting. I would strongly recommend doing your searching *in* the US if you have time, and only take the keepers back with you. You are much more likely to clear customs with a few dozen souvenir coins than a few thousand in rolls.

Hello Tollickd and

Perhaps I've been lucky, but I've never had a problem getting a few rolls from any bank, although many banks haven't had any half dollars. I've never tried asking for a large quantity of bills, but cashiers have quite happily given me change for a $20 in ones and twos. I've found bank staff usually very friendly and helpful.

Your best bet would be to call ahead and plead your case with a bank branch. Say a little white lie and mention you may be moving to The States and might be looking for a bank in the area. That also gives them the opportunity to order extra boxes for you so they're not 'out' anything.

Honesty is always best. Just tell them where you are from and your collecting habit.

Banks have lots of rules that get broken every day.

Of course, Smile and be polite with your request.

I wouldn't see an issue for a teller to break $100 into 100 singles.

The Chase banks in my area will sell up to $100 without asking for an account #. I'm about 50 miles from NY.

Really try to hook up with a few New Yorkers on the forum here. Offer to swap some local coins or stuff we don't usually get. Send a bit of cash, $25 for a box a of cents, $100 for a box of nickels. Look at them while your here, have the CCF CRHer take what you don't want back, you making up the difference. Spend some time together, I'd do it, but I'm in the Midwest! Think it might be a great way to exchange some culture over a meal or coffee!

Explain you are going to a bachelor party at a club and it was suggested you bring some ones. Flash a hundred and ask how many they recommend.
