There were no hairlines before I sent it off, however they must've either been under the surface and someone is a heckuva coin doctor

They were there covered under heavy toning. Coin drs are much better than that too.

Lets look at this logically. What do you think is more likely that NGC decided to scrub a coin like a bunch of clueless people that found a mint error in a parking lot, or that the toning was heavy and strategically placed to sell the coin raw where people would think they found a diamond in the rough?

The answer is it was strategic toning. I'm not going to believe NGC pulled someone off the street and said clean this, when they ruin coins it's almost always chemically not armature style like that.

I've said it so much and some people push back on me, but when coins like these are raw there is usually a reason

Again, Baseball. Hairlines like the ones seen in Ploopy's second set of photos would have been very evident when placed under a direct light source. You are wrong on this one. Those hairlines are new.

No I'm not. You're literally trying to argue NGC scrubbed the areas that were strategically the darkest heaviest toning like an amateur.

Yes you are. It's okay to be wrong sometimes, man. Those are new hairlines and a botched and disgraceful restoration attempt by NGC.

Though I do find it hard to believe that NCS used an abrasive of sorts on this coin, the hairlines look completely fresh to me.

You're losing so much credibility right now in all honesty.

So you think they had to have scrubbed the coin like an armature because you saw a picture once?

I'm almost speechless having to correct this kind of knee jerk reaction

I'm not losing anything, dude. Just stating facts. If it makes you feel better, keep telling yourself you're right. Moving along....

So sad when people think they know it all and are so far off.

Anyway, NGC doesn't scrub coins like an amateur nor do any of them

The hairlines appear fresh because the coin was just conserved. As ploopy said in the original post, the 'toning is slightly odd'. Looking again at the original images, although tough to make a call on the color itself, the abruptness of the toning pattern is not natural.
Artificially toned, concentrated in the areas that are now shown to be covered in hairlines?
NGC simply uncovered what the docs were hiding.

Mike F,

Do coin doctors have the ability to fill holes, scratches, and cover hairlines? The answer is yes. You posted a series of coins that had been doctored and graded details. On the coins you posted it was very difficult to find the problem.

The OP coin was doctored to cover problems.

It is silly to claim that NGC put the hairlines on the coin. I have dipped a number of coins with dark toning that have exposed hairlines that could not be seen before the dip.

My guess is the coin doctor used a putty like material that appeared like toning to cover the hairlines because the toning does look like an experiment gone bad.

Hairlines were probably covered by a 'coin doctor.' TBH I like how it looks now more than it did with whatever was applied to it by the coin doctor.

Small update: I ended up selling this coin for $900 as is in the NGC holder. Here's the coin in a PCGS holder with a vastly different look and surfaces selling for $1400

So your saying this seller doctored the coin further and then sent it into PCGS? Also, is this seller the person you sold it to?

Yes, same guy and he's very reputable. I wasn't saying anything about doctoring I was just surprised that the coin looks like that now.
