Some sort of chemical or environmental exposure has damaged the coin. I seriously doubt there's much that can be done to restore it.  |

What do you think?   Since this is going in my grandson's penny folder I experimented with Nic-A-Line coin cleaner. Just got it in the mail today for foreign coins. Came out fairly well. |

It looks worse! Now it's a cleaned coin now, and the value has been heavily reduced! Never clean coins ever, except with 100& pure Acetone or Verdi-Care. The patina was removed in the process. You should have just left it alone, because now it's considered a problem coin.

You can argue whether it's better or worse, but either way it has almost no value.  |

I'm sure his grandson doesn't really care whether or not the coin has lost it's patina.
It will look better in his album and as Coinfrog stated, there is
not much value in the coin either way so why not.

Still though, in general, don't clean your coins, unless it's a junk drawer coin (never clean expensive coins). Acetone and Verdi-Care is fine to use.

I don't understand how you can say it looks worse. Eye appeal skyrocketed in my opinion.

It has a dull look to it in my eyes, but it doesn't matter, since it's my opinion. Not trying to cause an argument here, just telling you what I think. Errers and Varietys.

Not worth spending the effort on IMO. You can buy these in mint state for a couple bucks.

Maybe it would have been better if you had said this in your first post instead of chastising someone for cleaning a coin for their grandson. I know I have cleaned coins for my granddaughter because she likes them "shiny". |

I don't appreciate it at all. I was just saying in general it's not a good idea to clean coins, that's all! Don't cause unnecessary problems with me, because it's just a waste of my time and energy. There is a fine line between cleaning and restoring. In this case I think both pictures show a cleaned coin. The first pictures, I think shows it was improperly cleaned. As the coin started to tone it shows spots where it was not rinsed correctly. The second set of pictures the cleaning has improved the coins apperance. Hopefully it will darken some. Great coin to put into a folder for a grandson. I have seen hundreds of Whitman Wheat cent folders.. and I have seen a lot worse looking coins filling some of the holes. This type of collecting for young kids is suppose to be fun. |

Not quit sure what your talking about but one thing I would like to know is since when have these become your threads? Thought they were the property of the CCF.
