Quote: Maybe they DID slip something past us... I don't thing sales of mint sets, bags, or rolls have suddenly doubled. Agreed. The Fed ran low and placed an order with the Mint. The half dollars being NIFC was not mandated like it was for the dollar coins. The lack of demand made it de facto NIFC.

But why haven't we heard about the Fed ordering halves again after not ordering any for 16 years? I would have thought that would have been worth an article somewhere.

None of this makes sense. The Feds were low? I wasn't aware these were stockpiled for circulation use? And I can't see there being a high demand from the sales of sets. I haven't bought a current mint set in a long time as they are bloated with dollars and quarters I don't care about and not to mention overpriced.

Perhaps it just flew under the radar? The news has been rather, uh, busy as of late. Quote: I wasn't aware these were stockpiled for circulation use? Yes. The fed having a stockpile is why they quit ordering them from the Mint in 2002.

But the question remains. Who is using that many halves to the point where the feds need to replenish their stockpiles?

The casino useage is interesting because most if not all casinos use cash vouchers for winnings now. At least the dozen of them I’ve been to do.

2018 P 5.4 M D 4.8 M and the years isn't over yet. Something really odd is up here. What could possibly spiking the demand and causing the two mints to produce over 10 million halves in less than nine months? Some odd things have been showing up of late in our CRH threads. Three months ago, someone got an entire brand new box of 1995-P halves: http://goccf.com/t/321385And now we have boxes of 2017 coins showing up and an increased production of 2018 coins. I'm willing to bet some people have probably found entire boxes of 2018 coins by this point.

I've been trying to bring back half around my town. I paid for coffee this morning with halfs. 2 bucks worth and the coffee was 1.78. The lady got so confused and a little frustrated that she couldn't grasp the idea they were 50 cent peices. I just walked away.... but I love paper money but it does cost a lot more in the long run to keep a dollar produced in circulation. A coin unless lost is there for a long time. Just cost more to ship.

Cheaper and easier for them to use the half dollar for those than make their own like all the others. Aside from roll hunters just hogging them I just don't see how any significant usage change wouldn't have a casino aspect to it

Well, roll hunters, of course! Guilty! I've "hoarded" at least two whole boxes of half dollars since I started up again 2 1/2 years ago. I'll need to tally up my figures to get an exact number. So how many active coin roll hunters are there in the states? 10,000? 20,000?

50, maybe 60. Seriously, though, it is a good question.
