It does not appear to have been done after it left the mint because the trim is not cut in half but is pushed down with the cut implying it was still being made . I would like to know how you can just assume it was done after it left the mint, what tells you that it was afterward and not before, explain ?

Simple and I'm not assuming- If you knew how coins are minted, then you would know that it is impossible for that to happen during the striking of a coin. Anything that happens after that is PMD. Now you tell me how you think this could possibly happen during the striking of the coin. Edit- Correct typo Edited by JimmyD

Note how there is pushed up metal surrounding the gouge. That points to PMD. |

I am saying I dont believe it was intended to leave the mint . It looked like it was a coin to be discarded and not sent out into circulation .so this would not be post mint, if it was never to leave the mint . I am trying to say this penny was to be discarded and not kept, but somehow got into circulation . This is what I meant by assuming . Is post mint anything after its been struck or when it leaves the mint building .

Again, There is no way that happened at the Mint. It looks to me like someone has tried to cut it. And yes, PMD is anything that happens after the coin has been struck. |

Destroyed coins are "waffled" by the mint, completely defaced, can't even enter circulation.

I always prefer to say post strike damage. This limits the damage to what can happen in the stinking chanber which, once understood , sets limits to what can happen to a coin and still be defined as an error from the mint.
The damage to your coin could not have happened in the striking chamber

Yeah I was also thinking post strike damage with snips myself. I've seen the marks they leave.

Post Mint Damage is an unfortunate term because it confuses new collectors. The word Mint in PMD is supposed to be Minting but everyone shortens it to Mint and new collectors connect with the building and not the process of creating the coin. That is why I encourage the use of PSD Post Strike Damage. Anything that happens to the coin after it is struck, no matter where it happens is Post Strike. |

No the damage Godspell happened after the coin was minted, so therefore it is referred to as Post Minting Damage or Post Strike Damage. The die came down on the blank and the coin was "minted" The "snip" damaged occurred after that. Could have been inside the mint or outside. I would go with the latter.
