Reverse rims look filed. Rims all around look suspect. And Liberty's head misshaped. Toning could hide signs of a cast counterfeit. What is going on with the mintmark and "Half Dollar" looking polished. Is the date embossed at all? I'd get your money back.

Coin looks real albeit severely damaged, i'd start with environmental damage, and possibly tack on cleaned (due to what seems the high points and reverse rim), and scratched. I'd return this one.

Yes, That is what I thought when I first saw it.

Here are some close-ups of the areas you asked for. Do these help?

Interesting conversation about a rare coin and I wish we could have more of them. Please let us know how this comes out and good luck!

Really looking forward to this one. Yes, please update us when you get the grade. I think no matter the grade, you will come out as a winner based on the price you paid. Are you sending it to NGC or PCGS?

There's something wrong with this one. It looks like a cast counterfeit. Even if it isn't, the ED is so bad that I doubt it's worth the $500 you paid for it. IMO I'd try to get your money back and put that $500 towards a much nicer coin even if it isn't a 55-S.

It's disappointing to see folks on this site get problem coins. Try to purchase nice, original coins with eye appeal. Your collection will be a prize in the long run. Sorry but you'll regret it over time buying problem coins.

Chester take a look at auction history on PCGS. There's no shame in purchasing compromised rare coins.

That's a snobby comment that I wouldn't expect from you. BTW: where were you when he was asking for grading opinions? What would you grade it at this point?

Yes, you're correct Mike that it was snobby and I apologize. I guess I was tired and cranky last night. I know all about this date and am concerned that this coin is too damaged or worse to see those prices you mentioned.

My intentions when I originally posted this was to get some feedback on condition of the coin and whether to submit it for grading because of its rarity. My thoughts on condition was VF Details Environmental Damage (looks like something you would find on the road damaged) so my expectations were not that high. There are many of you that I hold with high respect and trust and I know that your comments and opinions are from your point of view.
All of us collect coins in our own way and the only correct way to collect is by how YOU want to collect. Some people will collect for profit, some will collect for a prized collection, some will hoard and some collect type sets and so on. Whatever way you want to collect is up to each and every one of us and we should not discourage or demean anyone from what THEY want to collect.
Did you know that there are well over 1000 known die marriages for the Seated Liberty half dollar? I know some collectors that are trying to get each and every marriage known, this cannot be done by waiting for an original eye appealing coin. Sometimes you will buy whatever coin is available regardless of condition.
The 1855 S Half Dollar had a mintage of 129,500 and was the first year for the San Francisco mint. The estimated survival is around 500 with only 5 graded, by PCGS & NGC, MS 60 and up and 3 proofs with a possibility of a fourth. There is only 26 graded in AU by NGC and PCGS. There are 4 known die marriages, this coin being WB-4 and is not a cast counterfeit.
