This GENUINE 1804 Mexican, 8 real dollar coin suits me. Now, if only it had a U.S. counterstamp!

jgfindring - exactly. I'm just trying to understand it. Does the "strike it rich" mindset overwhelm all rational thought, or what?

kbbpll no need to defend your comments I feel the exact same way after seeing enough posts like this.

At the end of the day I just conclude sometimes it's manufacturers that come on here to figure out details to make their product more convincing.

It happens. We have removed posts in the past when we were able to prove it.

It's been some time since we've seen any "grandpa's attic" finds.

Similar to the manufacturer theory, sometimes I think it's people who want to buy & flip, looking to see how easily they can fool somebody else. Then there's the "I struck it rich" people, who typically show up here for 1 or 2 posts and disappear. This one starts to feel like it falls into the "you can't help someone who won't help themselves" category.

Again, don't get me wrong, these "is this real?" or "is this an error?" threads can be very educational. Heck, one of them caused me to discover a previously unknown hub type. In this case, the history of the 1804 dollars is quite fascinating. 4 of the 6 Class III varieties were purposefully worn to disguise the concocted stories of their origin! I would never have learned that without this thread, so thanks richardvador.

Both the 1804 US Dollar and the 1804 Mexican 8 Reales are fake.

I spotted the alleged "fake 8 real piece" on ebay; not mine. What about this piece spells fake? Since the seller is "top-rated Plus" and has 100% feedback on 6,800+ sales, I was inclined to believe the coin genuine. Add to this that the seller offers a 30 day return.

Swamperbob an expert in the field pointed out the issues with this very coin as I originally looked at buying it.
Here is the link to that thread. http://goccf.com/t/336773

I believe Bob. I'd like to know the markers. Is it a contemporary counterfeit? Also, was the seller informed? This coin looked likely genuine to you and me, both.

Exo, his main issue was the rim.
Quote:
Note in particular the arc along the edge of the coin where the words DEI GRATIA are located. This line is where the die face ends which is short of the edge of the planchet. That can not happen on a genuine strike in an open sided screw press because the die face was larger than the planchet itself.

Thanks, IndianGoldEagle. Makes sense, it does. Good to be aware of this noticeable marker. I'm guessing, then, that this is a modern counterfeit, as opposed to 19th century? Regardless, this fake is more deceptive than the OP's posted piece.
