Ahhhh yes. At the 12 o'clock, I can see the scratch go over the rim; definitely a scratch. The 6 o'clock end stops before the rim.

thanks for the reply

The value drops a lot when a scratch like that happens. Basically a cull now.

on the reverse can we get some pics of the rim top and bottom ,might be a strike though , but the #2 pic is showing something we can't see well .if it's a scratch it should go over the rim , looking at the T ,it looks die cracked.and the top rim looks pulled down some. but I'm no pro. good luck and happy hunting

every time I pull this coin out of my junk/I don't know pile I get upset... a crying shame (if it aint a Satin Coin)

Tanman2001 mentioned it might be a SATIN coin which were made with 95% copper; I didn't know that.

thank you for saying to take a pic of the top... this will definitely tell the tale of the tails.

Yes. a response by Tanman2001 in the thread mentioned it.

here is a pic of the characteristics page of the COA. The US Mint Uncirculated Coin Set made them that year in Satin Finish. They also made the zinc ones.

Scratch may be from a knife used to liberate the coin.

If indeed it is copper and not just a thick planchet, can anyone estimate how many may have been made.

More likely released. Like an impaired proof, folks will liberate a damaged coin and put it into circulation (although it was never destined for it). There is a slight chance that the wrong planchets made it into the business strike hoppers, but I think it's rather slim. Normally there would be some press on the matter and alerted coin community.

Try scanning this to get a better image. Nice information. When scanning, place the thing you want to copy and place some darker material over it. This will help reduce glare from the scan.

It was cut with a knife, like a razor blade. Note the trench is flat looking. Struck through wire, the trench is rounded in the bottom. PSD
