I think it's a fake. Too many things don't add up now and cracking it "to take pics" and not even including the cracked slab in the photos if that were true. Thanks for following up with the seller on it.

As for being worth sending to a TPG, for this coin I'd say it's required. If real it would be worth so much more than the minimum value threshold to make it worth it, and without authentication it's worth very little since this has recently been messed with.

The question asked is reasonable enough.
The answers so far have given at least some support to your doubts.
That is reasonable enough also.

For my opinion, I can see that there is great possibility that it could be fake and acid etched to erase all of the markers that would indicate 'fake'. Without being able to check for these, you are then left with the possibility that it could indeed be genuine.

Even if this coin is genuine, you would have done well enough, if you leave this one well enough alone.

Would I have bought it?
Yes,
but only on the basis that I think it if a fake. Therefore my chances of buying it would be very low, because there are others out there that would be prepared to take the risk at a far higher price.

Even so, and I did buy it, I would never have been completely happy to own it.

This one should be hard for a TPG'er to authenticate and slab.

Can't be an 1801. The large fraction alone precludes that.

The obv and reverse dies are right for 1804.

Hi all, from the same seller, I am interested in this coin -
https://www.ebay.com/itm/1794-Liber...173861706439

But now worried it too might be fake. It looks awfully ... silver. Aren't these supposed to be old copper? Also weird wear, suspiciously sharp date. Auction ends in 2.5 hours so any opinions most welcome.

I saw that one too and honestly can't say - I think it looks a lot better (more authentic) than the 1804. I would not be worried about the silver color I think that's just the photography glare. The pockmarked surfaces could either be indicative of a porous planchet (are these prevalent in 1794s?) or casting bubbles from a fake. But my general impression is that one's real

Thank you for the quick reply! Other things - what's that giant blob above the A in America? Why is AMERICA worn flat as a pancake, while STATES towers high & dry, like just randomly wouldn't they wear roughly equally? Stuff like that. Oh the dilemma of being a newb.

For TimNH. Personally, I would not buy any early piece without certification. Way too many counterfeits out there. Especially when dealing with Colonials. Pay the extra for piece of mind and crack it out if you chose.

The bidding for the 1804 is up to $761. I agree with the poster above that it's more like a $500 coin.

As far as being authentic, ebay allows 30 day to return an item "not as described" (it matters not what the seller lists as their policy). That should be sufficient time to determine whether it's real.
