b_j_w_79, That's very good going, maybe the ones that went in circulation all went to your area.

It's not likely they all came from broken up Mint Sets, Too many. Well done!

Well it doesn't look too likely I'll find any of these in change these days then. I can't see myself noodling $36000 worth of 20 cent pieces either, but I was wondering if these pop up on ebay or coin shows much? If so what do they fetch?

You can buy an uncirculated coin no problem. People just break them out of a mint set. They are around the $30 mark individually. Better to buy the set I think.

I don't think I would be willing to sell them (but there is always a price ). I agree with latman100 that the best way is to break down mint sets if you a chasing one.

I have seen a couple sell on ebay in circulated condition, which sell for more than an uncirculated coin. I guess some people prefer to have that consistency through their collection if they have a circulated set.
However, I tend to believe that they are "artificially" circulated, as that particular seller often has MSO coins in circulated condition.

By coincidence, I was just now looking at my Aussie 20 Cent Pieces in my Dansco Album and saw that my 1983 and 1984 coins are BU.

I feel lucky to have them, and wouldn't have them if it weren't for Aussies who have been very friendly and helped me out.

I think tomorrow I will go to the bank and get a heap of coins to search. To hot to do anything else. Then I am going to lie in them. 43 degrees is ridiculous.

43. Just don't leave them in your car and do that...you'll get branded.

I agree 43oC is ridiculous and at least another 2 days of the same to go (here in Melbourne anyway) and I had friends complaining we hadn't got a real summer this year. This week has changed all that!

Yay! It just hit 45 in Bundoora. I am sooooo happy. My eye balls are melting. Who said we aren't having a Summer? Three weeks ago it was 19 degrees, go figure. I feel sorry for the poor tennis players.

Hi all, I seems to miss this discussion last year then was having computer problems. New computer was that solution.

I see the last post here was 29 January 2009. As people would know, the worst natural some say unnatural, disaster in Australia's history was the following weekend, Black Saturday. I do hope all our Victorian members came out of the bushfires safe and well with no property losses.

Back to topic. The melting down and non-production of 20c coins in late 80's and early 90's was partly due to the release of the $1 coin in 1984 and $2 coin in 1988. There was simply too many 20c, and 50c in circulation, even the 1984 $1 saw withdrawal and melting down after release of the $2.

It would seem a small number of 1988 20c did get released before the breaks were put on production. Then in 1993, the mint either restruck or released some earlier years and sold them to the RBA for circulation. The Mint confirmed this and that no 1993 dated 20c were struck for circulation. The same happen for $1 coins in 1991 I think when 1984 dated coins were released.

I have only ever found one 20c dated 1988, no 83, 84.
