Before buying West Indies either buy slabs and/or have a good library/auction library so you can plate match and verify weights.
My West Indies Collection was sold privately and via Stacks 2009-2010. Check their archives. Never owned this rarity. Nice! If real ...

@ colonialjohn yeah man I hear that! I was buying some Morgans and and the guy said he had some "pirate ship" coins for me to look at! I paid $40 each for 3 coins; this 1/5 cut, an Ottoman 2 Kuruish And another smaller silver colonial with Phillip v (which I have no idea about)! I took a gamble on this one!

Quote: ... the guy said he had some "pirate ship" coins for me to look at! I paid $40 each for 3 coins If it's genuine, that would be a great end to the story, as the other two (posted elsewhere) were an 8 escudo copy, and a common 19th c. Ottoman coin. Would be nice to see the tables turned!

Sent it out to NGC this morning. I'll post back results.
Guy also had a legit slabbed "El Cazador" coin but wanted $300 for it. I passed. All the stuff I got from him was legit except for that 1 "Escudo" copy. Well see....

 Ironic that the "treasure" coin was a fake, and this hacked up bit was the treasure! Congratulation!

Thanks for the update, Jayyk31! I'm happy for you that your coin was authenticated, but I'm also grateful that you kept this thread alive. We get so many questions about coins that never get resolved. It's super helpful for others to see the final outcome whether it's good or bad because it adds to our collective knowledge.

@jgenn
It is good to see the result, and it is also good to have some decent quality photos of this coin. It appears in two of my references but because the subject is considered to be minor ( sadly ), but also possibly because not much is known, book photos are small.

My mistake..... I received a 2nd email with shipping info and when I went and looked on my submission it said " NOT GENUINE". So there it is, a counterfeit. Wonder if I'll get an explanation from them as how they came to that conclusion. Problem with this piece is I could not find a lot of detailed info describing the coin. Oh well... But my apologies, the coin is "NOT GENUINE" as per NGC...

Not all bad news IMO ... I remember awhile back Stacks had a collection of real and fake pieces. This looks like then a contemporary counterfeit of the period or a bit later. See August 2015 Chicago ANA Stacks Sale The Atteck Family Holey Dollars Collection. See : Lot 31338 Description THE ATTECK FAMILY COLLECTION OF WEST INDIES HOLEY DOLLARS. Guadeloupe Contemporary Counterfeit 9 Livres (9 Shillings), ND (Authorized May 9, 1811). FINE. I own this coin ~$500 and it's a fake. Not all fakes are worthless. This IMO is a good fake ... <BG>. So which part is fake? The host coin, the countermarks, or both?
Are my initial concerns relevant about the roundness of the arrows stamp?

Oh man, I was rooting for you! I'm glad you at least sent it to NGC to make sure, the photo vision picture even looks amazing. Hopefully you can call up NGC and ask them about the coin....maybe they will tell you what was fake about it.

Well I bought a Sigma recently. If I would have had it before I would have found that the metal was not silver. My guess is it's some nickel alloy, cast or struck counterfit. So I would have known if I had the Sigma before I sent it off. It looks darn nice tho. I might contact NGC to see what they think of it. Thanks for following the thread guys & all the help!
