Excellent addition to the collection Bob, Interesting pommel design similar to that of the Ottoman design on their Yathagan swords but 3,000 years later.

Thanks, Jim. There were actually three swords in the auction - all from the same region and time period. The other two were longer and more impressive with regard to their surface decoration. However, I didn't bid on them since I could tell from the photos that they were riddled with bronze disease, which is often an issue with these ancient bronze weapons. This one was in the best condition.

That is a fantastic addition, Bob. Truly mind-boggling to consider this sword's travel through history to your devoted hands. It has found an excellent steward!

If I may inquire, Bob...How do you come to choose a specific object to go after? Have there been any "objects of desire" that you haven't (for one reason or another) been able to acquire?

I had to catch up on this thread a bit, but what an amazing collection of weapons. If I didn't know any better I'd think you were making yourself that Iron Throne from Game of Thrones to sit on so you could rule Westeros.

Thanks, Mike and Chris.

Yes. I've checked off many of my initial collecting goals with these weapons, but there is a particular type of pennanular guard dagger that I've really wanted. See illustrations from a couple of sources below. These things hit the market once in a while - in fact, I spotted one a few days back. But competition is always fierce and bids get too high too soon for me. I am having to learn to live without.

Fascinating how an ancient tool...a weapon...is transformed by time into a compelling piece of art. I can understand your desire, Bob. A worthy target.

I also understand the frustration of having an object of desire elude your grasp. Only last week I lost out on an impressive sestertius of Elagabalus. The second time in the past few years.

I wish you better luck with your next attempt!

See 3,000 year old sword found in grave, Germany. It's a beautiful well preserved sword. Other artifacts were found including arrowheads.

A quick update to this thread. Just acquired my second "Iron Mask" sword:

It's in rough shape, which is typical for these. They are very rare, very old (9th-8th century BC), and very fragile. Here are the two posing together.

Another nice piece of history there, Bob. Considering the age it/they are in a remarkable state of preservation. It is a wonder that they have survived in one piece at all.
