@Embot2019, first welcome to CCF. Second, as the frog said, '76 cents were made from copper (not clad).

Just sticky residue gunk on your coin. PSD, not an error coin.

Hey, thanks everyone for getting back to me!
So if someone puts a piece of tape on a coin and leaves it there, this is what will happen? It's so bizarre because it looks like a different metal and not sticky but obviously the sticky would go away :)

This coin is a good example for collectors of what not to do. Definitely tape residue affected the toning on the coin. Sometimes people use to put tape on the coins in an album to keep them from falling out.

Experiment with a piece of tape on a modern and you can see how this occurs.

Do we think it's weird that I tossed it on a coin scale and that it weighs in at 2.963 grams? I know it can be +/- 0.13 but I was just curious.

FYI heads up, sorry to say it wasn't tape. There's a little coin shop in my town that's been around forever. I brought it in just to confirm it was tape. Not tape! The gentleman said it was a classic example of a struck through plastic error. Interesting. Please click below websites for other examples. And yes, it is normal that some of the raised letters and humbers are the way they are. Just thought I'd let you know. :)

See how the darker area on the gold coin is lower than the rest of field on the coin, your cent is even with the field/surface.

look around liberty on your coin, if it was struck through plastic, with the tons of force needed, the plastic would have pushed the copper down, all of the area around liberty would be indented into the surface. Use some acetone on it, it's just tape residue.

Also, note on the gold coin that the plastic left a non-reflective field up to the very edge of the design elements. On your coin , the tape that was on it touched the higher parts of the design but bridged over and did not affect the lower designs and field that were immediately adjacent

Another case of a coin dealer who does not specialize in errors not understanding what he is seeing.
