Interesting...the symmetrical center hump certainly might suggest a cause. I think I see some concentric marks too, but I'd like to see a more detailed photo if possible.

I'm leaning towards a post-mint damage, i.e. whacked by a hammer or some heavy object with irregular surface but higher resolution photos will definately help.

I've downloaded Infraview and hope to improve the view of the $2.00 coin and would post the picture. By the way I'm using a scanner and not a digi camera.

Sorry there's no Jeweller here to help me weigh it. I've gone to two shops to have it weighed on their digital grocery scale. The first scale read 0.05/kg flat and the other scale 0.006/kg flat.

I'll get back to youse after I've tried my best to enhance it.

Davidson, your image will greatly help if you play around with your scanner settings. Most scanners are set at default at 300dpi but should be able to go to 600 dpi easily. I'm not too sure what your model is but chances are it should have an option to increase the resolution unless it's a really old model.

Hello,

Scanned the coin again. Hope it come out okay. If not I'll take gxseries' advice and scan it once more.

I've also weighed the coin at another shop. They use a Wigiburn Digi DS-688 grocery scale. The weight of the coin agrees with that of the first weight i.e., 0.005.

Is there a hump in the middle or is it just the lighting? If there is, I reckon post-mint damage.. If its not, then it shall make things a little more interesting

There is a hump in the middle. I guess I should tell you guys where I got it from as nobody has asked me that question.

I received part of my wages in a $50.00 roll of $2.00 from the Bank and while going thru the coins(for errors/varieties) which was mostly of 1988s, some 1989, a couple 2001 and 2003's found it.

I thought at the outset that it could be a premint fault. If it is a premint as justabeginner and gxseries think, is there any value to it should anybody be interested.

The value of something like this is very subjective, it will probably only appeal to error collectors, assuming they think it is an error. If you were to put it on ebay, you may be lucky and get $20, or you may get no bids.

It is a difficult one to try and say for certain what caused this, but thanks for posting it and giving us a chance to try and figure it out.

Hmm.... If its post-mint then it has no value, on the other hand, if its a real error, then there will be some added value to it.. Do a search on ebay for some misstrikes, etc.. Some of them go for a lot.. :)

Sorry guys. Not really satisfied. So refreshing this topic for further deliberations pls. I'm picking up from markn.
Hello Markn,

Once again I've reweighed the coin on another scale also a digital scale (Quartzell NCI) used for mails. So this would have some trustworthingness. The reading I got was 0.007. I then weighed a 2006 $2.00 and it weighed exactly the same. I've dissected some pics for you to evaluate-
first is the obverse and reverse

Second shows part of the rim which obviously the upsetting mill had indented. The tips of the crown and the legend part 'A' and 'U' are quite visible.

Third is the "A" and 'U'

Fourth is the neck and chin lines.

The eyes, nose and mouth

The second is the tip of the hair

the tail end of no.2 and

Lastly the native plant.

I think the coin is genuine and not a fake. Obviously it had passed through a lot of hands. Could it be categorized as a spectacular error? What error category can I place it under? Are there a lot of errors like this with aussie decimal coins?

Hi markn,

I was told 0.007 is in milligrams. Converted would be 7 grams or rounded to the nearest gram. I hope the advise I got is correct. Yes a jewellers scale would have been more appropriate. Anyway the point is that the weight is the same as the 2006 $2.00.

You'll need better accuracy than to the nearest gram unfortunately. Skimming the design off of a small coin like the $2 would likely remove less than half a gram.

even a .4-.5 gram variance is pretty substantial for a coin, and well within the accuracy of jeweler scales.
