Coinfrog, it weighs 2.74 grams my friend. It's definitely bronze. But, it's not the narrow bust variety where they first started minting the L on the ribbon.

Have you tried looking at it in black and white? John1

Good suggestion John. And don't forget to go near max contrast, too.

Thanks for the weight, it's a BR for sure. But I think you'd have hard time convincing a potential buyer this is the "L" version, so it effectively ends up in the "no L" pile. Also, it looks cleaned. Let me ask you - would you pay "L" money to re-acquire it?

Coinfrog, let me look at it in black in white first before I answer that question!

All in, I'd say a cleaned "details" example of the "no L" BR 1864 cent.

Coinfrog, after taking John1's FANTASTIC advice and after looking at it in black and white I have to agree with you. Here is the black and white pic. John1, thank you so much for teaching me another way to look for things. I owe you a lot my friend.

I believe one of the diagnostics is a pointed bust vs a rounded bust. I don't believe this coin is the L type.

Can't believe it took this long for someone to point out that it wasn't the pointed bust so it couldn't be the L variety.
