Quote: I am happy to say that 9 of them are vams I word of caution to those taking the " VAM plunge" ... all Morgan and Peace dollars are VAMs. The vast majority have no added value, but a few bring modest to astronomical premiums. A VAM number is assigned to designate the obverse and reverse die marriage for a set of coins minted from the same pair of dies. Sub-numbers (3, 3A, 3A1, etc) usually designate noticeable changes to the die pair (clashes and breaks). Check out the listings on VAMWorld for more detailed info.

Eg, Much better on the pictures. I've narrowed this down to 3 Vams. Now I need your help. (1) Is there any sign of doubling on the bottom of the 2 lower arrow heads? (2) On the inside of the mintmark, is there a vertical bar, and if so, which side. The New Orleans mint is well know for its weak strikes on Morgan dollars. Coin looks relatively free of hits and dings. Still shows plenty of luster. I wouldn't be surprised if this coin came in as a high AU or even MS. I'D still try and get pictures in the gradeing section. There are some fellas on the forum that can grade a lot better than me.

I am no expert, but I can see a faint line beneath the middle head arrow Quote: (2) On the inside of the mintmark, is there a vertical bar, and if so, which side. If I got this right you mean inside the letter O. I cant see anything inside.

Okay Eg, if either of those markers were there, you would see them, very noticeable. VAM 16, date set much farther right than normal.

Eg, Each year every Morgan dollar was assigned a number for the obverse and a lettering system for the reverse. The numbers and letters changed each time a variety was discovered. Each year started with VAM 1. Normal coin,, no oddities and date in normal position. Neck vee points between 2 denticles, count denticles to right and normal date starts at 2 1/2 denticles. Now for some VAM #s. III2 1 obverse C3a reverse Normal coin. VAM 1. III2 1 obverse C3b reverse This indicates the round O on reverse. VAM 2. VAM 2 can be eliminated because obverse has normal date positioning. III2 2 obverse C3r reverse 1 in date is doubled & date set farther right than normal. O mintmark doubled. VAM 3. III2 4 obverse C3a reverse 18 in date is doubled. normal reverse. Vam5. Your coin. III2 5 obverse C3a reverse Date set much farther right than normal with a normal reverse. See how the numbering and lettering systems change as varieties are discovered. Couple of pictures to show you the difference in the mintmarks. Oval O with narrow opening within mintmark. Round O with wide opening within mintmark. Hope this helps.

So, as far as I understood my coin is VAM 16 because the date is set much farther right than normal. Please correct me if I am wrong

Yes, there are 51 different varieties for the 1884-O. A coin like yours was the 16th noted.
