The 1848 and 1841 are definite fakes, the dates look way off, like something out of a cartoon. Not sure about the 1872 though.

Early dollars are among the most counterfeited coins, period. Every week it seems, we get reports of people finding these, only to find they're poor quality Chinese fakes. Weight and magnet tests will cull out most of the bad quality fakes.

Here are some pictures of real coins with these dates.

I will maintain until the day I die that there are more fakes of these early dollars out there than there are real ones. Might not be PC but, then again, I could care less. (I hate that concept)

I appreciate it. I was afraid of that. Almost in too good of condition, although I must say they seem to be pretty well made in comparison to some. Supposedly had been in the family for years...

Agree on the first two, but the '72 looks much better. Must be an expert witness here.

I'd say 3/3 counterfeits.

My first impression is that they have all been cleaned.
I don't know SL's well enough to pass judgement on them.

Apparently well cleaned and that is odd for fakes. Why clean a fake coin? Why not try a magnet to see if made with iron? Also, what is the weight? They all sort of look fake though.

Having seen a number of these in recent years, they typically appear to be in xf-40/45 condition, along with a dull aluminum-gray coloration. Typically underweight, they fail the ping-ring test. Some have been attracted to a magnet. Color and condition detail tend to be the initial alerts to me.

Not magnetic. Oddly, they make a satisfying "ting" when dropped... I'll try to get an accurate weight.

The serifs on the numbers in the 1841 date are bold and rounded compared to the thin and pointed serifs on the PCGS specimen at the first link that CalzoneManiac provided.

I tend to agree and does there appear to be remnants of a seam separating the obv. from the rev. on the rim?

Why clean a fake coin?

Because abrasive cleaning can be used to hide casting bubbles, adjustment marks, and other things that would give the coin away as counterfeit.

OP, sorry for the bad news, we all hope you stick around though!
