Gidgit ... You left too early. Was trying to find you to let you know that there was an '82 2/1 Obv, but with no DP's. I already have 10 or so, so I didn't need it, but thought you might like it.

Did anybody buy anything or was it just a 'social visit'?

More a social visit. I found nothing for my interest except old dealer friends.

By the previous posts we can conclude two things:

1) the social aspect of coin collecting has been and will always be strong.

2) as far as finding multiple good items to buy, all I can say is " the good old days are gone".

I used to go to 6-7 shows every year in the T.O. area ... now I'm lucky to get to 1-2 and then only if friends from the East or West Coast, US & Canada, are going to be there. As raw coins got scarcer and scarcer, so did my attendance

Yes, me too.

In the past, probably at least 10 a year, if not 15.

Now, maybe 1 or 2.

Another way, prior to 2008 buying at coin shows 90%, buying on ebay 10%.

Now, buying at coin shows 2%, buying on ebay (and a few other sites) 98%.

Still buying some very good deals, but it's much more difficult and time consuming with more searching.

Gone are the days of seeing raw coins, in-hand, and choosing from a large selection of coins that also were diferent from show to show.

Now, it's the same overpriced garbage every show (maybe 'garbage' is the wrong word, but honestly, that's how I feel after more than 10 years of seeing the same old inventory from these dealers at the shows).

I completely stopped going to coin shows. Why? I gradually picked up the coins I needed elsewhere at half the price after dealers refused to negotiate on price. Not exactly the business model to expand the hobby!

I find way better selection and usually better prices on ebay for coins. For banknotes I tend to like to go to shows as it is harder to judge a banknote without seeing it in hand. I have my favourite dealers and these are the shows I try to attend, assuming they are no more than 30 minutes to get to. This usually means 2-3 shows/yr.
