I don't recall seeing anything similar, but I'll certainly be on the look-out now.

I do not profess any expertize in this area, but if this were a case of post-mint damage, I would expect to see something at the points where the figure "1" and the letters "OL" overlap skippy's tail and hindlegs.
I can't see anything obvious in these pics. The next step would be to get your best magnifying glass out, and to examine those areas carefully, to see if the "1 DOLLAR" have been removed by grinding, or whatever.

I think the likely answer is that this IS post-mint damage, and that your example is reasonably-well executed.

Would have to be post mint doctoring. Too big an oversight to leave that much detail off a die.

Where can I take it to get it looked at by someone who knows about these sorts of things? (Pics obviously aren't gonna cut it). I'm in Melbourne.

I'll try for a closer pic of the areas of interest (the macro setting on my little digi cam isn't as good as I thought! Or should I post full res pic?).
What I notice is the background has 'texture', unlike the other coin, but is consistant over the whole surface where there aren't any kangaroos. Also the legs and tail of the main kangaroo and the paws of the second kangaroo don't seem to be blemished at all.

Nancy - that's what I was curious about - how could it have not been picked up for 20 years in circulation! I was counting up the till at the end of a days work at my parents shop when I came across it. Or why would someone go to that much effort and put it back into circulation?

Post mint damage. Cant be die fill or the legs of the roo would be missing. You could take it into Downies in the City and ask for an opinion there.

Of course there's another possibility: that it's a counterfeit. It's a bit hard to tell without a clearer picture.

I was able to zoom in and capture this. (Pity it has to be under 100kb).
Look at the legs and tail of roo #1 and paws of roo #2. Amazing! Note also that 'textured' background I was talking about.

That is some incredible work. That's a huge wow factor. I love it. That would have taken a huge amount of work & precision to achieve such a faultless result. The only real spots you can notice is a tiny bit on the tail & a tiny bit on the leg & that's only noticeable with magnification. I'd paid a good $$$ for that coin.
