Just a damaged mintmark punch issue. DoesThisCount, you always see things we don't, things they just aren't there. Have you ever considered marketing this "ability"?
No OMM. Just damaged MM.

I always ask first before declaring, and I haven't found anything of note yet except some spike heads. I think it's easy for a newcomer like myself to think they have discovered a valuable coin. |

There is a lot that can be learned about error coins from reading and searching the pages here within the CCF. True errors are really uncommon occurrences, and again I encourage everyone new here to read and learn, and if you still have questions, ask and we'll help you out! Remember too, full well-cropped photos of both sides of your coin, and close-ups of any areas in question.  |

Also, this is the internet. Amateur radio is much the same - noobs are crucified for "should have known this already". Sorry, just venting. BTW - I too love Mercs. I found one metal detecting and have been hooked since. |

John1 gave me some very good advice back in 2017 when I first started, read every post on this site you can that way you can also use them as references. Good advice from a guy I respect.

My first reaction was "No Way Possible."
I'm not totally convinced either way. I know there is no current OMM listed and the probabilities are slim to none.
Most likely circulation, staining, or other below the MM but the line through the lower serif is linear straight, not curved like the RPM posted for comparison. But a strategic die scratch could also be straight.
The first image looked like staining but the second seems to show a raised bumpy area going N-S below the lower serif. How about a clear closeup of the area below the lower serif showing any raised metal?
I can't do an overlay, but wonder if it would be worthwhile to see if a D MM is even a possibility?
ps. Helpful suggestion to the OP- I find it interesting and thanks for sharing but when a bold statement is emphatically made, like your title, we get very very skeptical. IMHO, try framing something like this as a question instead of a fact. You will need verification from professional attributors and experts in the field and they will be skeptical because of years experience and they may need an uncirculated example, missing any contact marks.
Words of encouragement are one of the major food groups.
We need to consume them regularly to thrive and grow.

The issue with that mintmark is not that mintmark it self was damaged, the punch that creates the mintmarks back then, was damaged. These punches were used on the newly created dies that were already hardened.
