I agree with the above response, I wouldn't soak it in anything, nor do anything else with it. I would leave it alone and if I wanted it graded thats what I would do with it and forget about it. If you happen to try some of the stuff mentioned above and for some reason something goes wrong you would never forgive yourself nor anyone who even mentioned you try to clean it and it would be impossible to get it in a problem free holder if you decided to getit graded which would hurt the value of the coin drastically

Although a forum member (a working chemist with a specialty in metals) has developed a formula which seems to effectively remove verdigris without otherwise affecting the coin, this is too significant a coin to trust to a process which hasn't been accepted yet by the TPG's.

Are you able to determine for sure whether it's verdigris or just crud? Point being, if verdigris it has to be at least stabilized somehow or it will continue to further damage the coin.

If it were my coin, I'd submit it to PCGS as-is. PCGS will not slab it if there's verdigris, in which case I'd follow the NCS/NGC submission process. If PCGS does slab it, then you've maximized the resale value.

The pics aren't definitive, but I don't see any reason why that coin won't go MS64 or better. It's worth doing right the first time.

I did not notice this earlier when looking at the coin (I spent almost the entire time looking at the obverse), on the reverse there are 2 rather deep groves around the rim, one goes from about 10 to 12 o'clock and the other from 6 to 8 o'clock. Both of the are gradual on one end and abrupt on the other. Hard to see from these pics, it really shows when you view from and angle.Any thoughts?

Hi,
I see that now...interesting!
I haven't seen this too often on FEs...it happened during the strike of your coin.
It's a rim Cud, and it appears that something happened to the reverse die where a sliver of die metal was broken off the edge.
Perhaps the reverse die hit the obverse at a slight angle--that might explain the groove and the Cud. Any other thoughts?

Beautiful coin you have there. I would try submitting it how it to PCGS/NGC. If it doesn't get slabbed by either one then you can try submitting it to NGC'S NCS coin conservation service. Though some people don't like the results after NCS is done. This thread might be of some interest for you (Private message me for the link)
I think it came out nice. Good luck.

Thanks Amazon!

So what does everyone think that this rim Cud will do to the grade/value of this coin? I was contemplating getting this slabbed, is this Cud going to knock the grade down so far that it is not worth it?

thanks

It might affect the grade, it might not. I never sent a coin in for grading so I can't say. Maybe someone else can help you?

I personally doubt that minor rim Cud would affect grading since it was as struck. And yours is a nicer strike than many FEs.
Btw, I have an 1857 with a noticeable planchet defect slabbed by NGC as AU55, where I doubt this defect affected grade.

I do not believe that slight rim anomaly will adversely affect the grade.
Again, very nice coin.
