American Numismatic Society - Coins minted at Pergamum in the names of Philetaerus, Asclepius, and Athena were an important part of the money supply of western Asia Minor under Attalid and early Roman rule, but those three did not authorize this profusion of much-needed small change. So, who were the authorities who helped push the region—the cradle of Greek coinage—toward fiduciary bronze in the second and first centuries BC? Noah Kaye (Michigan State University) discusses a collection of c. 150 coins in the museum of Ödemi#351;, Hypaepa, in Lydia, that allows us to elaborate on answers previously developed from excavation data at Sardis and Pergamum itself.
