I second the card table idea. I do not use towels or anything, just the padded top works good.

I'd be more concerned about scratching the counter top.

littleboy... great idea! I just tried sorting some dimes on Glass, hardly any friction at all.

Quote: I'm a renter; not owner. Us landlords just LOVE reading things like this. Someone pays $500 a month in rent for a year and does $10,000 damage to the unit! I think everyone should own at least one rental property during their lifetime to see what it is like to be on the other side. OR, let me rent your most valuable coin for a year and have the attitude "it's just a rental, I don't own it"! LOL

Quote: I'd be more concerned about scratching the counter top I think that this qualifies as the first time on CCF I have heard someone express a concern about scratching something onther then the coin... Quote: Us landlords just LOVE reading things like this. I think if the worst of the damages are a few scratches on the countertops from coins you are getting away pretty good.

MorganNoob, I am one of those pocket change collectors you hear about occasionally. You know, the ones who think "they're just coins" and have never handled a coin by its rims intentionally. Cotton gloves? HA! Coin tongs? Double HA!

Kurt, do you think those coins in my pocket might make my pants fall down?

MCM-- Quote: Someone pays $500 a month in rent for a year and does $10,000 damage to the unit! OT: Ok, I'll bite-- who are these people and were they billed per their contract? When I leased a place, I actually did many repairs to the home and left it in better shape than at signing. Quote: Does sliding coins on a Kitchen counter cause damage to the coins? I think the real risk in sliding over wood/plastic is possible dust or grit on the surface that could abrade the coin. If the coins are circulated already, and the surface is clean, you should be OK (imo).

I don't want to get too far off topic, so just a quick word. Most renters are fairly decent but there are a small percentage that do a LOT of damage. Probably like coin dealers. Most are fair and honest, but there are just enough who are not that makes us be careful when we purchase from them.
I like using a towel for the surface, just because a dropped coin will not roll off the table. I keep a wooden plank nearby for when it might be needed.
