It's damaged - bent. Probably hit really hard by something.

Wouldn't the features be flattened? The edges of lincoln, etc are crisp. Also wondering why it's color is so off?

The color could be any number of things to include environmental damage. The shape and size of the coin is a very solid sign that the coin was damaged. There is no mint error that would bend a coin like that.

HI Redshirt

Thanks for the additonal effort on the pictures .

The rim looks like it has a groove which goes around the coin with a small raised area on either side , Is this correct ?

Hmmm... it has a rim like a regular penny, which is offset (thicker/wider on the liberty side), while thinner opposite and there is a flatter zone of about 1mm just inside the rim before the penny bends more. I think, looking at the sides the rim does seem to be ever so slightly out such that there is a hint of a groove around the penny.

I was reading that this color could come about by someone goofing around with plating solutions or cleaning solutions, but I also read there is a slight chance of an actual brass blank sneaking into the run.

Redshirt I am talking about looking straight at the edge of the coin like you took the pictures .

it almost looks like the coin may have been encased at one time and it may have been bent removing it from the encasement , like a lucky penny pendant or something .

this section particularly .

Definitely damage. One of the pictures shows a surface that indicates that heat may have been involved.

Thanks,
Bill

As others have indicated, the coin was damaged outside the Mint. A portion of the edge shows it to be concave in vertical cross-section. This is something you see on Encased Cents (lucky token cents).

Sorry, away from forum for bit... I see what you mean.

The lighting really plays tricks at the edge... there is a ridge and a beveled edge.

TY for the info. I'll hang on to it for fun. At some point I'll bring it to someone in person, but expecting them to tell me the same!
