Quote: What do you see that makes you say it's a fake? I asked this question because I compared the posted coin image with my 1856. Mine is a PCGS MS-62 S-3 with an Eagle Eye sticker. So I'm quite confident mine is legit. I was trying to see how mine is different from the OP's.

It's still the 5 that sticks out for me.

@Kanga, You can tell yours is real just on the date. This is your date. Notice how the 1 has a square bottom, the 8 have perfect ovals and the 5 goes to a point. This is yours a real 1856: Now look at the fake, curved bottom on 1, the 8 ovals are crude, the 5 doesn't have the point. Not to mention the 6 is too far away.

The other tell sign on the fake is the E, the E in the real is exaggerated. Notice how the middle bar almost or touches the other 2 bars. The Real 1856 E The 1856 Fake E, its tiny. Simple bad copy. One of the reasons I don't like doing these comparisons is that know a faker can tell what one is looking for and can improve on the 1856. These are just 2 of the things to look for there are others but I'm not typing them.

Quote: While I'm all for helping and in many cases I will, this is an example of that we will never see the OP again. He (I'm 99% its a he) didn't win the coin lottery. Hence he won't be back. True, but this topic has over 500 views and will continue to show up in searches. Would be nice if people who land here in the future find an answer and not (another) dead end.

Quote: But I think all Moderators, whenever possible, should encourage every new member to do at least a little research into their question... Replace Moderator with Member and that is acceptable. Even that is better than "obvious fake." Quote: ...perhaps only using the undersized and unappreciated Search box here, and use correct spelling and grammar before posting right-side up pics. Raise your hand if you were born with the knowledge and ability to do all of that... Put those hands down, you filthy liars! We were all new to this at one time. For many of these new members, this is their very first experience with online forums. Let us show them some patience that I am sure most of us wish we were given. Remember, these newbs do not have thick skin from cutting their teeth on a BBS or in Usenet newsgroups like some of us do.

As an aside, for the 1856 Flying Eagle cent, something I'd not considered before; it was my understanding that none of the 1856 Flying Eagle cent were meant for circulation, they were minted for various Federal officials as an example of the new small cents, just a few hundred of them, and later there was interest from the public who could buy some which the US mint produced were specially minted for these collectors. Does the 1856 FEC have status as a "special issue" experimental coin? Some of the older small cent albums for FEC do not have a slot for the 1856.

Meaning that it is a full counterfeit not a modified 1858.

@oldfordman, I posted on page 2 why its a counterfeit, this isn't a modified Flying Eagle, its a cast copy. There are other tells but I'm not posting them as the counterfeiter will know what we are looking at.
