I use an older version of Photoshop CS 6 to replace my backgrounds with a color/texture combo layer. I haven't taken any Photoshop classes, so I'm sure my method for removing the original background could be improved, but it gets the job done.
I'm glad you asked this question! I pulled out a PS guide and I have a DVD of Photoshop Tips that I'm going to find and watch. I've only had it for 7 years, so I think it's about time.

In Paint.net, you want to use the circle select tool to mask the coin, then invert the selection (CTRL-I), press DEL to remove everything but the coin, then use the paint bucket to fill with your colour of choice.
The only reason why I do it this way instead of Crop to Selection is because the cropped image border will touch the coin and I prefer to have to space between the coin and the border. It also prevents you from having to use the paint bucket in all four quadrants.

I do one coin at a time, then combine them into a single side-by-side image. If you want to edit an image that is already side-by-side, it will take a little more work. You can use the Magic Wand selection tool and adjust the Tolerance to select just the existing background. It works fairly well if there is good contrast between the coins and background.

I do not know inches. I like pixels. The image looks good. It is a 1000px image (999 actually), which is what I use most of the time for GTP.

Circle crop is in the Trimming/Angle tab, in the Aspect Ratio menu.
Your output with Paint.net looks great! No need to go with DPP IMO.
