There is coins everywhere you look inside my house.. but the expensive ones are in a hidden safe.

Is it me, or does it seem like there to much moisture in your safes?

Tomasz

Of course there is excessive moisture in your safe. AND it's your own fault. Every time you open it and stand there drooling all over the place about your coins, that drool is moisture you know.
Now here is some suggestions.
1. Purchase a dehumidifier and place facing your safe.
2. Turn on the dehumidifier
3. Leave the safe door open
4. Take all your coins and put into a banks safe deposit box.
5. Note no more humidity in your safe, coins are safe, electric bill just went up, your purchase of that equipment helped the economy.

Brewzz.....

My .357 mag is a short reach away from my coins.....

How about when you're at work ?
Gone for the weekend ?
Is the gun and ammo where the thieves themselves can get to it and use it ?

And for those with safes....
If holding a gun to your wifes head or your child's head during a home invasion, (you know the kind where they WANT you to be home) and they ask you nicely to "open up the safe"......WHAT WOULD YA DO ?
Most common answer is......You'd open up the safe. You and your families lives are not worth less than a pile of coins. The biggest most expensive home safe in the world would be opened by you in about 4 seconds I would expect.
I'd open mine if they threatened to SHOOT MY DOG ! (if I had a dog that is)...)....let alone me or my loved ones !

Of course.....being a "Country Boy".....I'd hope that my "defences" were appropriate before they got inside.....but, who expects, say..... 3 guys knocking on your door on a bright sunny Sunday afternoon in broad daylight ?....right after you finish mowing the lawn and the garage door still up ?.As soon as you or your wife open the door.....there's a gun in your face....then your family.....well.....nevermind.......there's so many scenarios it's ridiculous to ponder them all.
But the funny thing about "Home Invasions".........THERE UNEXPECTED !

1st line of defense , I live is a gated community and have video surveillance in and around my home.

2n line of defense, I have dogs and two of my neighbors are cops.

3rd line of defense, I have a safe

4th line of defense, I'm heavily armed most of the time

Devil's Advocate here...

I have seen you make this comment in the past and I thought of this a while ago: What if they request that you go to the bank and empty out your deposit box? You would still do that, right?

A well hidden safe and a deposit box are both only going to be known to someone that has researched their victim. They cannot just assume you have one; they must know you have one. So, neither the SDB or safe have the advantage in this situation.

IMHO, BadThad made the best argument for the SDB over a home safe: fire or natural disaster.

P.S. Don't tell the wife I said that or you may never hear from me again!

Yeah JB....I've repeated this comment before that actually another member made.....and it made me change "my" mind about safes being the safest place to keep a collection.
It was Metalman at the time who suggested too, that thieves could just demand that you take them to the bank...(or have you go there and do it)....And I have ALWAYS said too.....that it is also "Fire proof" and "Flood Proof" and "Tornado proof" and better "climate controlled" (or at least better than at home) .....as my "additional reasons" for Security Deposit Boxes.
But as for Metalman's theory (and yours too apparently) about thieves requesting you to go to the bank while your family stays behind in danger, well......here's my thoughts.
The likelihood of them doing such a well thought out and time consuming caper like that IS MUCH MUCH MUCH LESS THAN SOME RANDOM HOME INVASION OR MIDNIGHT BREAK-IN, WHERE THEY HAPPEN TO SEE A NICE LOOKING SAFE IN YOUR HOME AND ASK TO SEE WHATCHA GOT IN THERE ! That's just a fact.
And as far as word getting out over a period of years about your "nice coin collection at home", and that fact spreading to the wrong person or people.....THAT'S gonna happen to all of us eventually. (not necessarily the crime, but certainly the number of people knowing about it will increase)
I see the odds at .003% out of 765,000 that they would hold your family for ransom while you go fetch your coins from the bank.....giving time for swat teams, police, etc. to respond, surround....take action......the more time a thief takes.......he knows the more likely he'll get caught.....thieves want "EASY" crimes that they can get in ....get out.....and get away with. And so, I don't believe "The Miracle Caper" would be very likely to happen or even thought of by most felons who want to grab what they can in your home and leave.......credit cards....atm cards...cash.....jewelry...coins.....easy to get stuff.
They might even make you take them to a drive up ATM and get the cash and pin number.....but holding your family for ransom because they're aware of a few thousand dollars in coins at your bank.......just not too likely when compared STATISTICALLY to what happens.
At least in my opinion.......
Cause if they send me to the bank......I'll come back with a SWAT team and Navy Seals and few Green Berets and a couple of Delta Force guys !........
And if one of the thieves comes along for the ride.......he won't finish the trip very healthy......trust me.
I guess, for me it's just the actual "Odds" and "Likelihood" and "Statistics" in my own community. Home invasions do happen all the time here where I live.......but few to NONE where they have well thought out "capers" and pull off something ingenious and more risky than necessary.

My point is that anyone that chooses to use a safe should not have it out in the open where the random home invader or midnight "smash and grab" burglar will see it. If the safe is "out of sight, out of mind" then it is just as impervious to home invasion as the SDB.

Yes you have, but I was keeping it in the context of this current thread where BadThad made the comment, not you!

Regardless, I agree. The only downside I can think of is accessibility.

Best security system made right there........ADT takes too long.....and the cops take too long to arrive.

"Protected by PAW POWER FORCE" and "backed up by Smith & Wesson" should do rather nicely in a warning sign !......

I keep mine at home, don't get to show it off. It's kept in a bedroom where no one other than myself goes.
As my other hobby is furniture building, first, the cabinet for bulk and supplies.

Then the albums - a Federal style desk with hutch added. The inlaid coin in the door is a tarnished ASE.

With the desktop open. I haven't put the glass in the doors yet, so my cat likes jumping inside.

jgfindring: That is some beautiful furniture! What wood is the front of that cabinet, mahogany? It has a very cool cartwheel effect!

I keep the expensive stuff in a bank vault, and the more common stuff at home.

Good pick rkp. The front of the cabinet is bookmatched cuban mahogany veneer laid out in a sunburst pattern. The coin inlaid in the center is a replica 1933 St. Gaudens. I solve the "where to store expensive stuff" the easy way. I can't afford really expensive coins, so don't need to store them.
