As far as I know the Morgan dollar has not been cleaned. I have had it in a coin case and in gun safe for over 29 years. I do not clean coins.

Quote:As far as I know the Morgan dollar has not been cleaned. Prior to your ownership. You can see the abrasive lines on the obverse mirrors and relief. You've also got some buildup on the lower obverse around the date that I'm going to call verdigris or what might be pvc cause and effect. I'd like to see what others think of those details.

Quote: Are you saying the scratches on the face and background is from someone cleaning it Yes sir It's not an ugly coin by any means, it just does not hold up value wise comparatively to a problem free coin

It was common in the 50"s and 60's for collectors to clean coins. Coins with original skin became harder to find and the value for the problem free examples increased. I would grade your 1889 Morgan at XF Details Cleaned. The coin does not have the value to send in for grading. The grading cost would cost about the same amount of the coin value. Your Morgan could be sold on ebay in the $35 to $40 range, but you will pay about 15% for shipping and selling fees.

Thanks for your expert grading advise. Most of my Morgan's and trading dollars were my dad's so they mean more to me for that reason than $45. But it is good information. Thank you.

I appreciate everyone's responses and expertise. It tends to make me feel somewhat like I am wasting my time box searching etc. If my 46 year old dollar is still only worth a $1, and if my errored die crack quarter is only worth face value of $.25 I am not sure why I look for errors or save older coins other than the fact I enjoy it, but I also was hoping I am also gaining some value with my collection for my kids and grandkids. Maybe I should be silver hunting halves rather than saving old pennies, nickels, dimes, and half's. But I understand any coin is only worth what someone is willing to pay. Thanks again.

Re your Morgan - just because you don't clean coins doesn't mean the prior owner didn't This has been cleaned.

It's a learning process and there are no shortcuts. All experienced collectors have piles of mistakes, and no one has more than I do over the past 60 years. You just say, okay, I've learned something here and will try not to make the same mistake again, and then you jump back into the fray.
