But isn't it illegal to deface US coins and currency?

18 USC Sec. 331 Is the statute that is relevant to "penny smashers". The only stipulation that would make theses devices illegal is fraudulent intent. As the purpose of these is to create souvenirs, there is no fraudulent intent, therefore not illegal. It would be illegal, however, to smash a coin with the intent of passing it off as another of greater value. Such as smashing a nickel to use in a vending machine as a quarter.
18 USC Sec. 475 Is a statute that makes it illegal to create items such as business cards/placards, ads, etc. in the likeness of US securities. It also makes it illegal to attach such items to US securites or coins or other instruments.

Theoretically, each coin that is destroyed raises the value of those remaining. It's just that we have a LOT of "one cent" coins to go!

Sometimes you need to create something by first destroying. Such as it is with stretched coins--they leave a mark of history like a counterstamping.

I enjoy them. Use Canadian cents, though.

I've always casually collected the elongated coins. If you go to a place like Disney World, bring a roll of quarters and some nice pennies because there are a lot of them there.

Definitely for smashing the coins. Think it is a neat token and a relatively cheap token.

reference Kurt above (don't know how to post quote)...

sorta like the colonel in Vietnam who said, "...in order to save the village we had to destroy it"

I collect a few as souveniers of special places, have a few more left by relatives..oldest is chicago worlds fair , think it was back in the 30s.

I have at least 1 thanks to a fellow CCF member. I have never actually had one crushed myself, however if that's what you want to do with your money go for it!

Will I ever have one crushed? Mabey.

I've rolled a few cents myself. I prefer to use pre 1982. The reverse side of the elongated cent seems to show the original design of the coin better than the zinc ones do. Lesson learned....Don't try to use a 1943. I hate magnets!

My daughter collects them from her travels (and mine). She has Disney, Chicago, San Diego, Wash DC, Mall of America, Black Hills, San Fran. It's a really cheap souvenir. She even bought an album made just for them at the Mall of America.

I think it is fine...after all, it most likely is the cheapest souvenir you can get from a place. Until a year or so ago, my brother used to get 10-12 at a time to use in his geocache as souvenirs for the folks who found it! ( his cache was near the city zoo) They would leave something in return as well as sign the log book. Any way I like 'em.
