Maybe its just the pics but the surfaces look ugly.
Probably some prooflike reflectivity visible in the hand.

AU Details Cleaned - The coin does not belong in a straight holder as all the remaining luster has been cleaned off the example.

AU-53 but not sure they gave it a straight grade. Couple marks that look odd, one on the shield and one on the eagle's neck. They look like punch marks?

Looks like a possible patched hole. Almost looks perfectly aligned on both sides.

Edit: fixing grammer lol

good catch IGE. I tend to agree. when you see a consistent mark like this in the exact position on both sides theres a good chance something happened here and if you look close at the reverse mark its much brighter than the rest of the coin.

i think the coin may have been repaired

AU details ( PMD). still a nice coin but maybe the reason you got it for an insanely low price

I am confident the coin has not been holed, rather just incidental damage. An overlay image shows the two areas of damage do not correspond to each other very closely at all. I took some close ups of the areas in question to help discern whether these cross the "damage" threshold.

With the close upset I agree not holed, the damage does look close on each side bit doesn't match. It does look like more modern damage

new photos put a "hole" in our theory, now the question is since its PMD and in a prominent location will the coin grade straight. does look like an old cleaning but it looks acceptable and would not details the coin

AU53 and I'm hoping she grades straight.

Thank you all for the opinions! I agree with those that said the coin has had an old cleaning and was net graded down to AU-50. That's exactly what PCGS said.

Personally, I like the coin. The cleaning is clearly old and while it did leave a "glossy" look to it, it's not that unattractive in hand.

It seems that buying AU-50 coins is similar to buying MS-60 coins. Sometimes you might get one that looks better, but has a minor problem that isn't bad enough to warrant a details grade.

Thanks for playing!

AU-50 was my guess, and it seems to be right on the mark. Personally I think PCGS shouldn't give so much leeway to Seated dollars, and I think they should've called this coin cleaned.

That's all that matters! I am glad that you found an 1870 CC dollar that you are happy with.

I guess so. MS-60 just means that it is a problem UNC. Whether it is scratches, hairlines, cabinet rub, etc. AU-50 could be a problem AU, but it could just be a coin with more wear.

i'd rather have a nice circulated AU50 than a banged up MS60 or even 61. i'd rather have a nice AU58 than an MS63 with no eye appeal and a bunch of hits

It has nice eye appeal for a details coin and I think you did well on it.
