The effect is achieved on the metal, engraving a succession of square-based pyramids. Each face of the pyramid works as a pixel so that all sides with the same orientation form a complete image.
I like these security features. I wish more mints would do similar. The Britain Britannia security features are among the best, very tiny lettering you need a magnifier to read, changing laser image in a circle like this Spanish coin, waving lines in field, etc.
I'm disappointed the US Mint answer to fakes is a lame missing reed on the edge, easily faked IMO.

Nice. It takes the similar feature on the British pound further. The problem really is that you can't see it in a photo. And for cheap coins, when someone hands you change, you don't hold each coin, tilting it in the light. The best security features would be more obvious.
But what you say happens with any coin you see in a photo. All images can be altered with Photoshop. Security measures only work if you can see the coin with your own eyes and hold it in your hand.
I like these. I bought one of the 2022 bull from the US distributor. But it arrived with scratches on the sphere, sent it back for refund. Damaged coins can happen from any mint or seller. I expect better condition, especially with expensive bullion with high premium.
I'm sorry you were unlucky. You were right to protest. The maps of planet earth are wonderful on this coin and deserve to be had in good condition. I hope you got another coin in normal condition.
