The coin you purchased was from a stock photo, and you are getting the coin at a fair market price of melt plus a premium for grade. Gold is soft and easily marks, and the $20 Liberty Head on the obverse shows all marks because of the open fields and open cheek area. I would put the $20 Liberty obverse at the top list for business gold coins to show marks. The obverse on your coin is typical for grade. The reverse does have a few more marks than normal for grade. The reverse is forgiving for showing marks because of the design. In the grade of MS64 you can find a reverse with minimal marks. If you want a $20 Liberty with minimal marks on both obverse and reverse, you will need to get into the MS65 range and you can not buy the coin from stock photos. Your call on the return, but Liberty did nothing wrong as you are getting a discount for buying from stock photo.

I would send that back .
Maybe a 64 but zero Eye appeal .
The US grading Services , especially
PCGS and NGC continue to disappoint !
This is a perfect example of buy the coin
not the holder!

I usually prefer to "stack," buy ungraded bullion coins, bars, 90% constitution rather than numismatic coins.
Liberty Coin did nothing wrong, I know, stock photo and decent price. I think I can find a better looking MS64, likely pay more but I'll be happier. Sending it back.

64 Double Eagles can have a lot of contact marks. This one has a bit of dirt also. It looks accurately graded in your pics. A lot of people love "dirty old gold" for their originality. If you want a different coin then return it.
I disagree with those saying the eye appeal is zero. It has good eye appeal to many including me.

Thanks, the obverese marks don't look bad to the eye. I just don't like the visible black area on the reverse, dirt, smudge, whatever it is and right on eagle's head.

And I don't understand why you commented again. You said you were lost in your prior comment. tsk tsk. I own about 12 Morgan dollars graded MS 62 to 64 so I know a little about contact marks, just not familiar with classic gold. I knew what I was doing, buying a coin sight unseen, asked CCF members for opinions because I didn't like the reverse dark area. Seller allows returns. I'm sending it back. That's easy to understand. livingwater, you made the right choice. Otherwise you would always feel disappointed with it. After your refund is received, get another one.
15 years ago, I was in a LCS and he had AU $20 Libertys for $600 each. For some reason I only bought one, and still kick myself for that.

If you're not happy with the coin, return it or sell to your local dealer. If you are collecting for Numismatic reasons, yes, return it. However, gold is always a good investment. The bullion market is on the rise right now and is expected to keep increasing throughout 2023. Ofcourse, we'll have to see what happens. If gold gets to a sell price where you can gain on the investment, you would be better off keeping it atleast for a while. Just watch the market closely.

If you are buying Numbers, it's an adequate if "sight-unseen" type of coin. If you are unhappy with its aesthetics, then by all means exercise the return/replacement clause. I'll take aesthetics as the reason for a Keeper any day...
