Your coin was not clean, was restored. Different. As a owner of a lab who restore artifacts I can see this on spot. Lighter BN color yes for the moment, we will talk in 5 years if stay as it is.
If you clean a coin with this alloy will become yellow tint or very light pink color.
The hairs you see it is Die polish and the all coin show an old Die. The hairs was on the Die when was struck the coin, do not confound with cleaning coins marks. to compare: your 1901 has same hairs right to the E. Sorry RedRaider
I like more the 1903 coin then the 1901 which you has.

This coin is also the subject of another thread the OP has started, and frankly I'm getting confused. OP is now showing other IHCs for comparison. No further input from me.

silviosi have a 1863 IHC in a NGC slab UNC details with spot removed on the label that looks pretty much the same as coin in question.

It shows some scratches and so forth that does show it's age. Great observation there silviosi! It just didn't look quite right to me and now I know why!

Quote:Actually, a 1900 Indian cent in that sort of condition is not uncommon Perhaps my "condition" was higher than yours. Probably too high.

those hairlines look like they are crossing over some of the letters in UNITED STATES. the hairlines on nose and cheek look exactly like those in the field. I'm going with these are from cleaning rather than polishing.

Where are you getting these low pop numbers. This is a very common coin for the IHC series in UNC condition. There are more than 600 graded RED at PCGS alone. More than 800 in Red/Brown! This coin may have been restored, but it also has been cleaned. The hairlines are not from die polishing, they go through the letters which is indicative of a cleaning.

Quote:Jaime Hernandez: The 1900 Indian cent has the highest mintage from the years 1859 to 1900. Therefore, the 1900 Indian cent is very common in circulated grades. In Mint State condition it becomes scarce at about MS64 condition. However, there are probably still thousands of examples grading MS64 condition or higher. In MS65 they are much scarcer with possibly several hundred examples known. In MS66 condition or higher they are very hard to find with possibly no more than about 150 examples surviving. In MS67 condition it is almost rare with a few dozen examples verified. Anything grading higher is rare if any even exist. PCGS When I say around 150 still around I made allusion to the High Grade and not under MS65. What grade will be this coin I do not discern on. I give all my IHCs to a friend in Louisiana, but never had one better then 65 and with 2 Longacre Doubling.

thanks for the input I returned the coin. I dont like the surfaces. When you solder copper pipes you clean the copper first and thats the color of this coin like fresh copper. Couldnt get past the color and look of a cleaned coin.

Probably a good decision.

good move.
photos can be deceiving and the lighting in this one was not the best to discern original surfaces. tilting the coin even slightly can create shadows that are hiding surface issues and like I stated before the area in front of the profile and areas about it did not appear to be die polishing.

The hairlines do not look like die polish lines as the cross both the surfaces and lettering. Coin looks like it was wiped with a cloth.
