On the back of the Ike dollars is a view of the Earth from the Moon. You have to have a lupe to see the detail they have here.

There were three different patterns of the planet Earth. The differences between each pattern is very slight, but noticeable if the coin is in minty condition. When the coin is worn, like mine, then it's harder to discern (at least for me).

This is not intended to be the final word, but I see what appears to be incuse outlines. Because of this, and the shape of Florida, I think this could be a Type 2.

I am getting more and more tempted to send this Ike to a TPG. The thing is probably in XF-45 condition. I got it in a bulk Ike purchase. Could someone like ANACS grade the coin and determine it's type?

Just make sure they will recognize and note the variety on the slab. Not all TPG's will do this. I have never sent a coin in, so I would definitely await more advice before sending it in. You might even want to post this question in the TPG forum.

It is a Type 2 reverse. The dies used were proof dies for coins of the time. From the picture I can not tell if it is a proof coin that got into circulation of if it is a regular production coin. if it is a "S" mint mark it will be the proof. if it a "P" ( no mint mark) it will be the one your hoping for. Great Find

What type of Ike is it?

The ugly type. Oh...never mind, they're all ugly.

Sorry, couldn't resist a little joke.

Seriously, congrats if you've indeed found the scarce one. I know they're tough to find.

christian_cyclist, I'm going to sat Type 2 as well. I have one that I purchased from coppernickeldaddy and I sent it off to ANACS, and from what I can see, the earths match up. If it's a P mint, you have a good find there.

So ANACS actually put the type number on the slab? That is good to know.

ANACS has always been one of the best about how they label the coins. Good and consistent. I have NEVER been very impressed with the top-two, and well...nobody else exists, really.

I'm sure Coppercoins can appreciate this Ike struck on a cent planchet (part of an indent error)
