malissadawn, I am new and can't send you private email but thought I would still ask you in here. I would like your advice on coin stores as I am just starting out and would like to find a trustworthy source. Thank you

Hi Bargar, the best one I can recommend to you is Taylor's coins. I live to far to go there anymore but they are honest dealers, he undergrades a lot of the time to make sure you are being fairly treated, gives great discounts once he gets to know you, will let taxes pass some of the time and also has great bins of silver, large cents and more. Taylor's coins 1043 Avenue Road (416) 440-0379 http://maps.google.com/maps?oe=UTF-...lmd&z=14&t=mWhen I shopped from him it was at his flea market booth at Dixie mall which he has sadly retired. I am not sure if it's still him running the store or his son but either way it's a great family run business and the whole family is in love with coins so you know that they will treat the coins and you respectfully. Give them a try if you can. Also a place to keep in mind for supplies is UNITRADE assc. Check out their website. they have great albums, magnifiers, and all sorts of stuff and they give a 30% discount if you are not a dealer. http://www.unitradeassoc.com/Contact.htm99 Floral Parkway Toronto, ON, M6L 2C4 http://maps.google.com/maps?oe=UTF-...lmd&z=14&t=mI hope you are able to make some use out of this! :)

No problem, I am glad to help out. :)
By the way Bargar, when you do go there keep an eye out on what color the price is written in. I'm not sure he does this anymore but when I shopped from him if the price was highlighted on the 2x2 that meant it was on sale. I don't remember all the colors but I believe that if it was highlighted in pink that meant 50% off.

Sounds wonderful Bargar! I miss Charles greatly. I used to see them every single saturday and sunday. Missing usually only xmas weekend. Been a while since I could buy coins that way. I wish you luck in your purchases!

I'm glad I read this posting. I've just decided to fill some of the large holes in my collection starting with 1 cents and working my way up I was just now looking at the prices that one on-line dealer was charging for some of the stuff that I need, it was pretty discouraging. 1922 VG-8 $16.00 1923 G-8 $34.50 1925 G-8 $30.00 large cents averaged $3-$10 now I think I'd better start by checking out some of the bargain bins.
thanks guys

North of 49, Bargain bins are great for starting collections, but I rarely find any key date coins in them, mostly common coins. The only key date I ever found in a bargain bin was a 1922 1 cent, but unfortunately it had some lead splotches on it. The prices you were quoted for those key dates are quite reasonable. On ebay the prices often wind up going above dealer rates for key dates. I think given the current economic conditions, it is an excellent time to buy key dates, before prices shoot up later. I recently bought a set of missing small cent key dates at similar prices to what you were quoted.

Hey North, Aren't you temporarily down in the states? Maybe I'm thinking someone else, butttt I've heard great stories of Americans getting great deals on large cents and key small cents in shops down there. Maybe hit up a few different shops while you're there. DJpx07 on CT picked up a whitman folder with a 22, and 23 in it for 8 dollars. along with some other common dates, So keep your eyes peeled. It's real easy to find good deals on ebay in mixed lots. -Shawn

1945v I'm glad to hear that those prices I quoted were for key dates, I was beginning to think that it would cost a fortune to fill my collection. I just looked up the cost of the first few coins that I was missing and gave up without checking to see if these were important dates.I guess I'd better do a little research on what I'm missing before jumping to conclusions and giving up so easily. By the way I think that your thoughts on buying key dates now while things are down (economically) are right on the money

No I'm not in the States I'm in eastern Ont. but I know what you mean by good deals being found found there. Last year a guy I know picked up the "Queen Mum" for close to face value in (Texas?) they sell for around $250 or more up here. I'd be willing to bet that there are some very collectible coins sitting in someones "foreign currency" bin.

Not if I have had a chance to visit! I have only one shop available, and I go thru all the "foreigh coins", and pull the CDN, and Mexican. The latter, for old times sake. I once lived there, and had a nice collection, but that was many years ago, and like all good things, it had to go to "feed the kids". Dick
