Sorry and painful story to read.
This sort of problem is common with RAM proof material with fancy packaging, that has faux leatherette covering on the presentation boxes.
In humid storage conditions, just as easy to damage the faux leatherette, when it sticks to a 'protective'? slipcase.

Can reduce the value of the sets by 50% or more, even if the coins inside remain in pristine condition.

I have seen the comment:
"buy the coin, not the slab"
Not a parallel case with proof coin packaging,- you buy the coin and the packaging as a single item, and if the packaging is damaged in any way, the value of the lot is considerably reduced.

There have been occasions where I have taken advantage of this, and have bought NCLT silver proof coins at near bullion prices.
In almost all cases such as this, I throw the damaged packaging to garbage, and just keep the encapsulated coins.

mcshilling, I hope you checked today.

Here's a couple pics. Had to wait for my limit to be reset today.

While that tear hurts a whole bunch, I was expecting a long separation of the leather from the box. I wonder if it is repairable. I have seen leather repair kits before, but I'm not sure how good it works.

This has been a problem for a number of years with these packs. If you recall when you get them in the box from the RCM, they are wrapped in tissue paper in the box... If you are squeezing these onto a shelf or in a box, either keep the tissue it is shipped with or separate them with a sheet of kitchen parchment paper.

Dearborn, like sel says, it's all about the whole package with proof sets, and I didn't even get the box with this one, so a little hole is no reason to try to repair it.

vonigohcr, parchment would work way better than the tissue paper, it would get torn very quickly. Very flimsy.

Chalk it up to lesson learned. No more cramming them together. Hope I saved some grief for some members.

I may have some empty proof boxes & cases for you to pick up for free if you are in Toronto? (or perhaps pay for shipping to you)

I was planning to throw them out lol.

I have not had any issues with my proof sets, all of which I have in their original packaging, from 1981-2013 and 2020-2023. I have always found that keeping all the packaging does not hurt. It may take space but the space is worth it. Thank you for the heads up though.

Thank you for the offer wilson. I'll make due with what I have. Very thoughtful though.
