Congratulations, jpbone, that is a very nice example of a scarce coin.

Lovely VF-30. Grading company could have graded it lower because TPGs struggle with strike weakness. I like the look of a crisp early die state. Great pickup!

Nice looking piece that could go anywhere in the VF range. Does appear softly struck so VF+ sounds right.

Thanks guys. This is the most expensive coin I've ever bought and I've considered sending it back for a more well struck example. The cameo on the obverse got me. not sure what to do.

Wow, this is one of the dates I was never able to get when putting a Bust Half set together. I am envious. Nice VF-30.

I found an NGC slabbed 1815/2 Capped Bust Half on Google Images.

The rims on the coin that is the subject of this thread
do not look anything like the rims on the above mentioned coin.

I am definitely not knowledgeable on this series, and need some basic education.

sel_69I - one must consider the issues of producing coins in this era. strike problems, die issues, planchet problems. you are going to have coins that like this one where you have strike issues so the deeper devices on the dies are not going to be fully struck. the pressure on this one appears to be stronger around the bottom of the coin and weaker at the top thus the difference in denticles where some are completely missing. in this case from K10-K2

Although 1815/2 is the key to the series, they are still common. If you send it back you will not have much of a problem finding other appealing examples. Don't hold a coin you don't want, nobody wants buyer's remorse.

if you are questioning your purchase now it probably wont change in the future and it will always be in the back of your mind that you made the right decision by keeping it every time you look at it.

Northeast Numismatics has 6 in stock, two of which are straight XF-45's for just under $8k.

Point being if you save up a little more you can get a significantly better coin.

I would grade it VF-30, but it probably graded at a 20 or 25 due to the strike weakness. I still like the look of the coin.

Here is what PCGS gave it. I agree. I haven't been home to sign for it. I may send it back.
