It seems NGC and the Smithsonian Institute have been in regular partnership both ways - donations and encapsulating coins for preservation and display of their collections. Some are sold, and a portion of the proceeds from each coin will go directly to the Smithsonian Institution's numismatic department, helping to ensure the preservation of coins like these for future generations.

In 2008, and again in 2014, the Smithsonian Institution selected NGC holders to preserve some of its most important rarities. Many of the Smithsonian's rarest and most important pieces are housed in a specially designed NGC holder to allow for both long-term protection and easy access to researchers. NGC has also provided significant financial support to the museum and in 2012 alone NGC contributed $100,000. https://www.ngccoin.com/about/indus...institution/

It comes as no surprise that a 1921 Morgan silver dollar is part of the Smithsonian Institution's numismatic collection. Since this type of Morgan is considered an American classic, we had acclaimed numismatic expert Jeff Garrett take a look through our discovery to hand-select the best for further inspection by Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) where their team of experts assigned each with a stellar grade of Mint State-64 (MS64). In addition, each of these 1921 Morgans comes sonically sealed in an acrylic holder by NGC along with a special Smithsonian Institution Coin Classic label! A portion of the proceeds from each coin will go directly to the Smithsonian Institution's numismatic department, helping to ensure the preservation of coins like these for future generations. These coins have stuck around for almost a century, but time isn't on your side to make one yours!

Thanks! @datadragon. So they prob select certain ones or someone donates them to be sold by big dealers or auctioned off to help fund the numismatic department of the Smithsonian after NGC holders them. I had never seen these before so it is interesting!

Well, GovMint.com is in authorized partnership with the Smithsonian and makes coins for sale, reproductions and such I see usually which at times are interesting as they may otherwise be patterns or coins you could not get otherwise or at prices that noone generally could typically afford, and on those also portions of the proceeds do go to smithsonian. Unsure whether such reproductions are desired by serious collectors or increase in value over time being at least officially authorized and usually limited mintage.

What you have seems to be an extension of that agreement, it is a real coin (not reproduction) in a real ngc graded holder, with a smithsonian label fully authorized from them but may or may not at times have anything to do with coins given/donated or held at some point within the smithsonian collection but a collectible coin on its own with the added authorized special label attached due to the parties involved and their partnerships. Or as you said, potentially could take donations or duplicate coins within the collection for that purpose. I know ANA also sells duplicates from their collection in monthly ebay auctions but without special labels.

A few interesting examples of the reproductions:

Thanks! @datadragon thats great information! I had seen some of the private issues and the reproductions and find it interesting that there seem to be a few real Morgans and Peace dollars in the mix. I saw an 1890 that had sold as well. Just not sure how many or what the census is. I grabbed this 78s the other day but initially was unsure about it.

Had not seen these before, but for the most part, my Morgans have been raw purchases. Very cool!

Thanks! @-makecents- I had not either until I ran across this one. I'm glad there are programs in place to assist the Smithsonian with numismatics! I would love to see their collection!

They are different holders.

NGS slabs coins using their standard (sonically sealed) slab with the Smithsonian labels (extra fee).

They also slab the museum's coins using their reclosable holders, https://www.ngccoin.com/news/articl...-collection/

A small portion of the National Numismatic Collection is available here. The National Numismatic Collection is currently working to develop digitization initiatives in order to make the national collection more accessible to the public. Some of these pieces are not currently on view by the way elsewhere.

For those interested I called and spoke with NGC today about the Smithsonian Holders. The one I posted above was holdered 21 years ago in 2002 but the reverse of the holder looks like the last series holder of 2016, so I dont know. The rep said it was some sort of a promotion she thinks back then. She said she would look into it farther with a supervisor and email me back. Below is her response. I appreciate her and she was very helpful although not alot of further information is available.

Thank you again for speaking with me today! I was able to visit with my supervisor on this, and she actually recently had someone else ask about it as well! So what we were able to gather is that NGC has had "collaborations" with Smithsonian Museum, which you've likely read about on our website HERE. We are unsure what your coin looks like, but here is a coin that was recently graded by us and was sent to us by an individual collector:

image below

With this said, we can still grade and encapsulate coins using the label shown above, but we would need to have some type of "proof" or documentation that any coins submitted were from the "Smithsonian Collection" (i.e. a COA, a receipt from an auction claiming this information, etc.). That was the most information we were able to find out at this time. If you have any coins that may be eligible for this type of submission, please feel free to reach out to us and we can assist you further.

Please let us know if you have any additional questions. Thank you!

One more phone call to NGC... The 78s I posted had first been graded by them in 2002 then was reholdered into the new holder in 2015. The label was only available for a certain submitter for a short period of time. But unknown exactly who the submitter was because they dont have the exact record of who. So I feel better knowing the reason it is in a newer holder and it is genuine. Thanks everyone for commenting and checking it out!
