The coin is of South African origin.
Nelson Mandela Commemorative 2000.
The best way I can describe the error is that the bust (front side) and the Wildebeest (reverse side) are supposed to face the same direction but not in this case they are totally opposite meaning 180 degree's. I have almost thirty other examples of this specific coin and it is the only one the is reversed like this.

As indicated the total die rotation on this coin is 180 degree's and not 90 degree's as I first stated, I have thus changed my original posting to reflect so, Thanks

This coin should have a medal alignment, and from what you said I think you mean that your coin has a coin alignment. If this is the case, I think that this is an error and a good find. I dont know the name of the error or its effect on the coin value, but their are many experts here that will sure help you. I think you should also make sure that it is not a counterfeit. Only my opinion, I am still learning.  Nice find |

Hi All I do not know if this would have any bearing on the value of this coin but according to SACOIN there is a coin of the same edition that is currently estimated to be valued @ $74000 (Proof 69) the article can be found @ https://www.sacoin.co.za |

There has been a suggestion I send this coin across to the USA, will it be a futile excercise or is it possibly be worth sending over. ANY ANSWERS?

No need to yell, a simple bump would suffice.
The type of error discussed here is not all that uncommon. I would imagine that a die rotation error would only add minimal value to this common coin. The errors that really increase value are the more dramatic ones, like multiple strikes or off metal coins.

That coin is valuable because it is a very low mintage presentation piece in a very high grade while yours is one released for general circulation. However, IMO that coin has really been overly hyped(thus a highly inflated value) and that SA dealers website has a similar appearance to other sites in the US that hawk coins as a sure-fire investment, noting high percentage returns but not noting the fine details. The US has had coins that have been hyped in a similar manner and the values usually fall back to Earth when people realize that salespeople are the ones driving the value and not the market as a whole. As for your specific die rotation question, that would be a rare error with 180 rotation on a US coin. However, I have seen examples from other world mints that are relatively common so I really have no idea if it is common or not. Your own words are telling though- Quote:
