Very nice 'dropped letter'

@A1agrl:
What happens is that grease fills up a die (a letter in this case) and it can dry out and harden. then at some point it (the grease) falls out of the die and either lands on the planchet or get stuck to a different location on the die. then when the die comes down the hardened grease will act as a part of the die and make an impression of hte 'dropped letter'

Just to add.. .they can be oriented correctly or backwards depending on how the dropped hardened grease falls.

Wow. This may be the nicest example of a dropped letter I've seen.

Very cool! Another new one.. I'm starting to feel slightly embarrassed over how little I've actually learned after years of searching

This one may be bolder but the one in the link sure is neat with the filled letters "right there" for easy comparison.

You're 100% right, the Nickel wins the coolness factor, but this one wins the boldness factor.

Thanks for posting the image. These help give us some idea of just how hard the imbedded grease/debris can get.

That coin is killer!

"Grease" is a bit humorous here. That letter T was like 50% grease and 50% grit or something that then got compacted by 1000 die strikes into a substance hard enough to stamp a coin as if it were solid steel.

Pretty awesome to have a one-of-a-kind example that's so clear.

Thanks Dearborn for your excellent description of how grease can harden, causing a dropped letter to become attached to a die. I'm curious, does the hardened grease fall off when struck? Making this a one of a kind? Or, is it more durable, and can be struck onto more coins?
