So I pulled a 79 from my collection and the diameter and thickness appear to be the same..

Can you us a micrometer on it? I don't know if the mint minted any foreign coins in 79.

You should never use metal instruments on coins like that. John1

Yeah you might put that one aside for further investigations. That weight is certainly Abbey Normal.
...and yes that steel micrometer could easily leave a permanent mark on your coin.

I'm still stumped on the weight.

It may be a correct weight but I always have an issue with scales that only measure to a tenth and not a one hundredth.

I have posted more than once that a scale that reads down to .001 is better than a scale that reads .01 and they don't cost much more. Besides, the scale will last you your lifetime. Buy once not twice. John1

What difference does it make if the weight is 2.7, or 2.79. It's still way underweight even if it was 2.79.

It seems they are not as sensitive, not as true to actual weight. I suppose a good way for the OP to see, would be to weigh other coins and see if they are off too. The coin maybe light but not as far off of tolerance as it may seem to be at this point. Added: I have a small set of weights that I use to calibrate from time to time also, they are fairly inexpensive.

@ TACC: (you understood my joke) But not seeing any RPM here but that weight sure is confusing. Have you calibrated the scale?
