I can't edit my post but wanted to make another comment. I just noticed that the rotation was far more than what I thought it was it's actually a 140° rotation. That much rotation could bring a premium but I would have to investigate furthe. Good luck!

I would check authenticity before spending $ on a TPG. It's in the NGC top 50 most counterfeited coins. There are 2800 of them in Heritage archives and none mention rotated dies. That makes me a little suspicious. The fakes of these are very good.

I'd be suspicious already at "rotated dye"...

I wouldn't be surprised if it turns out to not even be real gold.

Little more information, I've checked the coin both by weight, mm size and using my sigma metalytics verifier pro. Coin checks and passes all tests I've put it through. It's a coin my father has had for a very long time and bought years ago over the counter at his coin shop. My dad who's dyslexic wrote "rotated dye" as he's not very good at spelling and gets letters confused. Either way I was surprised when he asked me to send it out and I saw the rotation. Thank you all for your information so I can best insure it to send it out.

Just FYI - the counterfeits originating in the middle east were real gold. You can see how good they were. Let us know the results.

kbbpll, I read the NGC article and looked for the key points that signify the fakes and I can't find the tell tale signs. But I'm not an expert on these specifically. I've got no problem spending the money getting it graded even if I find out it's a fake. I love things like this specifically because it makes me curious either way.

Does this coin have a 'medal alignment' strike, instead of a coin turn ? That is how it appears to me by looking at the staples, it appears to be rotated almost 135 degrees.
I'm curious as to its authenticity.
Maybe a trip to your local coin store should be your first step.

On review, Dearborn is right, the apparent rotation is greater than I thought.

umm, well then, umm (at a loss of words here) lol. maybe then a higher authority on this type of coin should be examined and evaluated properly. Since you are your own 'first step' then the second step is grading - you can send it to PCGS, I think that if it turns out to be a details of fake, you can opt out of having it holdered and pay a lower price for it. I think if if comes back in a "body bag" you would know.

Chiming in that there are no records on the Rotated Die census for 1912 $10 coins struck with dies from 90 to 180 degrees such as this one. In fact, only one gold $10 coin is on the census, and a smattering of $5 golds - each one is given a rating of R7, meaning between 4 and 12 specimens are believed to have been made each year with significant rotations. I believe getting it certified would definitely be worth it.

I took the coin to a broker of mine and asked his opinion and he tested everything I did and it all passed. He also said that doesn't mean it's legit or not and is also curious about if it will come back graded and if so at what with that rotation. I'll keep everyone updated when it comes back from NGC.
