A slightly uncentered planchet that was struck in a collar that wasn't fully deployed (a tilted partial collar error, to be precise).

I gather that a coin store is one of these places that says that they buy gold or coins? I always lumped them in with pawn shops.

Might be some specialty coin stores around that cater towards collectible & rare coins.
Pawn shops can be good and bad.
Your coin listed above is a 2 for., MAD & A Collar error. Cool.

A pawn shop and a coin store are two different places. Hobby Lobby might have the coin holders. ebay does for sure.

very cool find - an off center partial collar in the wild.. But, errors like this you want to NOT handle it by the flat surfaces and add more fingerprints to it. Soak that baby in Acetone ASAP to get the new oils and acids your skin put on it then 2x2 it!

Regarding coin flips, since the coin is oversized by maybe 0.5mm in diameter, will it still fit a quarter sleeve? Do they leave wiggle room?

What is MAD? I certainly have a lot to learn.

MAD is a Mis-Alined Die
You can put this quarter into a 2x2 for a half dollar coin.
But this coin is not a MAD strike. Go back and read Mike Diamond's post. He is the preeminent expert on coin errors. He is the lead editor for a column in Coin World.

Winthrop,
Just to be clear; your coin is not a MAD and it will fit in a holder meant for a half dollar sized coin. Make sure to staple it on all four sides and flatten the staples down.

Thanks, all, for your insights. It sounds like I have acquired an oddity good for conversation at dinner parties, rather than an eye-popping discovery. I have already treated the coin in acetone and will track down a 2x2 as the opportunity presents itself. For now it will live in a ziplock bag.
