What am I missing here? It's just a nice 82 The steps on the reverse are smooth, not sharp like they should be. Maybe I am missing something here. Just looks like an average coin to me. Please explain.

Seriously? Look CLOSELY at the 1982's you think are this good. You will see late die state, spots, corrosion, hits, subdued luster and poor strikes. I've looked through a lot of BU rolls and bank boxes, I've probably looked at several thousand 1982 LDC's, and have NEVER seen one that compares to this one.
The steps are exactly as they are on the master die! This year only had steps like this, not the "fine" type on other Memorials. The coin I posted is easily an MS-65, likely MS-66 because the luster is absolutely blazing. The light obverse stain you see is almost nothing in-hand. There's hardly a hit on it, just a few very light ones.
I hope this helps.

Hmmmm... I think I have to go back and take another look. I went through 2500 cents yesterday.. I know I saw a few nice ones in there. Maybe not as nice as yours, Although the 74s that I got is excellent. My Camera room has been transformed to my fly tying room.. I'll re-transform and see what good pics I can get. Thanks for the info

I kept stacks of '82s out of rolls for quite some time and none of them came close to resembling that one. I think it's a fake!

Your right about the 82's, at least in my book. I've probably searched thru 2-3 hundred bankwrapped rolls of these over the years and they are plagued to spots and weak or mushy strikes. the example you show in this post is one of the best I've seen. Very nice. Rock
