Acetone will remove surface grime. The coin size will remain the same. Someone has altered the coin and this is not mint made.

Thank you for your replies. So the dime then, I assume, is just somehow damaged.

Seems to have had several modifications. In addition to the glue/vise job, someone may have treated this much like a Texas Cent in order to slightly increase the diameter. Can you please give us accurate readings of both the weight and diameter? Thx and welcome to CCF.

That is about as good as I can do there. I don't have a scale to weigh it. To me it looks like the dime is on top of the penny, but I do agree the penny markings look imprinted. I would have thought a vice would have ruined more of the markings or the edges.

So, I dropped it into hot water for a bit, but nothing seemed to come off. I scrubbed it with disinfecting wipes because that's all I had that would maybe work? Should I try lime juice or goo gone? Or it will stay that way anyway?

You can try googone it is mostly acetone. I say you can try it only because your dime has no added value to it. Normally you should only use 100% pure acetone. John1

Oh I see, so if it was worth something only use acetone on the coin. Would goo gone ruin coins otherwise? I'm sorry I'm just new to all this. At this point I'm just curious how they could have done this.

GooGone has other ingredients in it that is not good for coins. Use only 100% pure acetone that you would get from the hardware store. John1

I'm going to say possible vise job. the cent and dime were pressed together, enlarging the dime planchet making it a 'Texas Dime' (just tossing it out there)
you heat up the dime to soften the metal.
So, is this dime you presented (the 2021-D) actually larger? and if so, is it also thinner?
Can we see an edge on image side by side with a 'normal dime?

You are right, it is definitely thinner! I also noticed the liberty along the neck is oriented different. Is that also a sign of being in a vice? Or, what are the signs that you see? I'm going to keep it so I can remember what a fake looks like. I might also need to break out my coin collection so I can feel better, and maybe share some here. Thank you all for taking the time to help me!
