Ultra Violet light. Must have been something about the 2000s. I Have 6 sets that I bought about 15 years ago. They look just like this. Just looked at them, doesn't look like they toned any farther than they were when I bought them.

Could there be something in the paper or plastic ogp that is causing this? I've always been curious about this. I mean, it is sealed and more protected from environmental factors than your average coin in circulation, but then there's this fairly even golden toning.

Agreed, just some weird toning.

I rather like the gold cameo effect. However, they need to be airtight sealed to keep them that way.

it does have a nice appearance if you are into toning of a silver coin.

oh, uv light. ok, yeah, they weren't in sunlight ever, that's why I didn't even think of that. lol. yeah, all the silver coins are toned, all of it is on the "rough" part. I have one with no toning, and one like this. I wonder if maybe they shipped some via air and the altitude popped the seal?

Quote: I wonder if maybe they shipped some via air and the altitude popped the seal? To be clear, there is no seal. The lens can be opened and closed relatively easy.

I have often wondered if this sort of toning is the result of cigarette smoking or actual house fire smoke.

I hate to admit it, but I've put coins on the roof during California forest fires and they tone gold. Maybe it's the UV, though. I figured it was the smoke in the air.

Acetone can be used as a type of solvent welding to the edge of the edge of the case, to provide an airtight seal. WARNING : Very easy to get this wrong, and irreparably damage the case ! Acetone has a very low surface tension, and can easily penetrate a long way inside from the edge, and give a very unsightly result. Apply the acetone with the tip of an an orange stick in tiny droplets along the edge of the case. Patience essential. If done successfully, the acetone would have achieved an airtight seal. Practice beforehand on some other acrylic objects to be joined along the edge, to achieve some skill in the application of the acetone.
