Welp, that is a counterfeit. Hope you didn't get burned.

I'm reasonably certain this is not an original coin. Not 100%, but I'd say better than average.

It appears to be a cast copy. The voids on the obverse such as the large pit in Liberty's right arm resemble casting voids. Tool marks appear to be to right of the date, and the date has issues at the 1.

The overall appearance is rough. On the reverse, there are what appear to be tool marks throughout the wing edge just behind the neck and above the left leg talons. Those are not high relief areas of the coin, which leads me to believe they are tool marks and not scratches since they do not extend across the high relief surfaces. The complete lack of detail on the eagle's left leg is at odds with other sharper areas of the coin.

There is also a flaw left of the H in HALF that resembles a casting bubble or defect of some sort.

Overall, the coin just does not "look" right compared to known examples in the XF-AU range (my own example isn't quite so lofty, so not as much to compare.)

Some of these issues could be due to environmental damage or PMD, but taken as a whole, the coin is suspect and merits a closer look.

The following genuine date is the die that the OP coin appears to copy. The OP coin has a number of problems: the stars are not formed properly, the sharpness on the date is poor, many bumps, and the mint mark looks off. The coin is a counterfeit.

Rim thickness, fonts, detail of the stars in the flag, and the boldness of the sun were giveaways for me.

Now that we know it is fake, check out the first post again and see how weak and unusual the luster is.

what this tells us looking at these coins (similar to the 50 LC recently posted by Blastenpene4) that we need to take a little more time looking closely at the coin if the photos permit it. it also tells us how important clear photos with proper lighting is paramount. if you just glanced at this coin you would just pass by all these markers. at least we have paralyse's eyes to point them out

Good catch on the rim thickness as it is noticeable when looking at a lot of 1927 S.

@jmc15john, the font on the 7 in the date is an easy tell as the top serif is not there on the OP example. See blue circle on 7 below. I hope you can get your money back form the seller.

I rely on my gut, when something seems off when I first look at it, I start looking at all the details closer. Rim, lettering, design details, color, etc..
