I'm leaning towards a planchet flaw. It's definitely not a clash.

Good close up magnified pic of the area would help a lot. Does not look like a die crack to me. It's not the usual place for die clash. Maybe it was hit with a sharp object, just guessing. You could check Vamworld.com, lots of listings there for 1921 Morgans.

Here is overlay where clashes usually are unless the die was rotated some and a pic of one of my clashed Morgans that shows where the clashes commonly are:

Would it be worth getting it graded and encapsulated?

Not worth spending the money on to have graded.

Looks AU-58. Only the smallest amount of trace wear and good luster.

The biggest difference is the berries count: d1 has 17 berries and the d2 has 16 berries with one missing at top of the right wreath.

Is there anything particular special about the d2 reverse?

Not really, as the 1921 Philadelphia issued dollars had only those two known reverses, D1 (17 berries in the reverse wreath) and D2 (16 berries). That description can be found at vamworld.com with much more information there.

Oh yeah, I was going to say your Morgan dollar does look like an appealing AU-58 to my eyes as well...

If this is a AU 58 with a planchet flaw what kind of value might coin be worth ? I am only curious it was my grandfather's favorite coin and will never sell. I want to stay in the family.
